It is a selfish act, maybe in their eyes for unselfish reasons. Think about it, most insurance co's don't pay in event of suicide, therefore you leave your family with most of your problems, especially if you have kids and a wife.

If you have never suffered severe depression before, you don't know how unbearable it is. Truth is alot of suicides are a result of severe clininal depression, including the bipolar type. You can't control it and it doesn't just go away ( except if your body responds to meds), but you can maintain right from wrong- it's not severe scitzophrenia or other disorder were you become totally lost and can't tell fantasy from reality or right from wrong.

I wonder if men are more suseptible to depression being a bad thing? Try to fight it, can't, and can't cope with feeling wimpy, so kill themselves rather than be seen as pansies taking meds or whatever.

So anyway, the people who killed themselves over " stupid" things actually have something much deeper going on, but the "stupid" thing is some sort of trigger. There is no way to self control severe depression ( though one can self control violent behaviors- including suicide), it happens and can get worst and you feel like so much crap. I guess it can be like PTSD in a way, you feel terrible and stressed and it won't go away. One must REALLY have to feel like crap to actually kill ones self, if not, then I'd agree they were wimpy for not trying harder ( getting on meds that may actually get rid of the symptoms, is an example). I mean I have had some really bad bouts in the past, but never once did I try to kill myself.

I hope you all don't judge me on this and think I shouldn't own guns or something. I have never been in a hospital to be treated for my depression, nor had cops called on me for something related to it. I just rode it out then, and I guess will ride it out now and see what happens next ( for sure I wouldn't be stupid enough to stop taking the stuff I take, unless its to switch to something else in case this stuff stops working- been on it since 1994- after reading the NIU shooter stopped taking prozac cold turkey and might be one reason or the sole reason for his becoming so violent so suddenly). My self control in this matter is huge, I am totally aware of WHY I feel like crap when I do/have. Fortunatly the depression is not very often, the med seems to kick in and kick its ass, often needing only some kindness directed at me by someone to get it rolling.

Wow thats terrible, to do something so permanent over bad grades. Time fixes all problems I like to tell my kids.

I would never have considered that gun ranges would attract potential suicide victims until I read this thread.

Well if you don't want to read a suicide joke quit reading here:

Sorry to Hear

That is sad that someones was sorry enough that they felt the need to do it it in such a public way.

The local range were I attend sometimes, had one of these a few years ago. So now you have to bring in a working weapon with you to be able to rent one from them, the theory is that if you have a working one, then you are not going to off yourself with one of their's.

Classic F*** YOU! gesture, IMHO.

I've known two people that did commit suicide (NOT at a range) and my sister tried it but was unsuccessful.

My take, and I realize this is based on my very limited anecdotal experience, is that some people who choose suicide are not just depressed, they are angry as hell. The two guys I knew who did it were angry, p.o.'ed, and abrasive most of the time. My sis was an "...angry little b**ch" (her own words) in HS when she tried. That rage gets turned inward and off they go.

Sorry if I sound like a heartless b***ard with my 'theory.' What I remember about the two guys is that I didn't like either one of them much and felt a little guilty about that when I found out they'd off'ed themselves. The deal with my sis was pretty traumatic too. But there's no denying the anger in each case.

it happens

We had one at a local indoor range. Gal seemed perfectly rational. The well experienced range crew talked with her and rented her a gun, sold her a box of ammo and a couple of targets, assigned her a range station. She walked into the "airlock" and there was a bang. When she didn't come out of either door someone went to check on her and found her on the floor with a self-inflicted wound to the temple. Some people are a$$holes and are totally inconsiderate of others. If she wanted to go there were plenty of less messy ways that were less painful to people she didn't even know. It happens. Luckily our sheriff is a realist and saw that this nutcase was going to off herself whether she did it at the range or jumped off a bridge onto an interstate in front of a semi. The range closed for the rest of the day. The medical examiner body bagged the remains and the range personnel had to clean up the mess. I only heard the story because I noticed the spackle drying on the hole in the drywall in the airlock. It didn't even get into the local papers and for that I give thanks and praise to a common sense group of law enforcement personnel. Thanks guys !

Made the scene of a shooting suicide a couple months back.

He used an earth-tone Springfield Armory XD-45.

Just heard we had one at Top Gun on the 14th. Haven't been there in a while, but I hope this doesn't shut them down.

They kept it very, very quiet though.
