Important Lesson Today

Had a few failure to fires today and learned how important it is to practice. All related to grip safety on point and shoot.

This is my first semi-automatic and I have about 700 rounds through the XD9sc now. Getting a little better at actually hitting COM. The one picture with the nice holes is aiming at 25 yrds.

Next is just picking up gun,pointing/finding sights and firing at 15 yrds. Reasonably happy with the rookie results but had a few failure to fires. Strange- never happened before and was getting bummed when I realized the grip safety was keeping it from firing.

So the lesson learned was when I just pick up the Xd9 vs setting up and aiming I am not gripping the gun properly. Nice to find that out now so I can correct it vs finding out when some BG is coming down my throat.

Did have a lot of fun - went through about 300 rounds and needed the stress relief!!

25 yrds aiming

15 yrds - pick up - find sights -shoot

I did the same drill - pick up and fire quickly. I didn't even take the extra 1/2-second to sight in the target 100%. My results were OK, but not as good as yours, oldfart - and I was closer to the target than you were. Nice shooting!

I would hate to be a BG in your way. Good job!

Thanks - still long way to go but getting better every time. Next time I want to do true point and shoot like you described without trying to find sight. I did a couple once before and I SUCKED real bad. (& I was closer too!)

I couldn't believe that picking the gun up I had such a loose grip that the safety kept me from shooting. Without discovering this I can imagine how I would have been with someone coming at me and adrenaline flowing.

We did one drill in a class I took that just had the target returning home and we had to fire five rounds before it stopped right before your eyes.
Thought that would be a piece of cake - found out it was a totally different experience - I think I got one of five - depressing.

The good part is I have found something fun to do when it's to nasty to ride the motorcycle.....if I can only afford the ammo.

A lot of folks do just that the first time or two at that drill. Don't let it bother you at all.

I usually shoot better when I just draw the gun, find the target w/out sights and fire. This is because that I have a tendency to anticipate recoil when I am slow shooting and aiming, which causes me to shoot a little low sometimes. I am trying to correct this though...
