Exclamation Reds Indoor South - Austin, TX

I went to Reds Indoor South in Austin, TX today for an hours worth of trigger-time.

Some Stats:

XD .45ACP 4"
300 Rounds of Blazer Brass and Monarch (Academy Sports ammo)
-230gr FMJ Monarch $16.95 / 50rnds
-Monarch was rather dirty, even left residue on the target
Flawless operation with all rounds
5 old mags, 3 new out of my XD Accessory kit ($40 at gun show)

$14 an hour before tax and $.25 targets (after first, cant bring own)
Stall walls and bench had seen better days, chipped / splitting wood
Target extender was shot in a few places and made it difficult to position
Excellent lighting
Range guys kept the floors clean and targets stocked
Indoor temp was only slightly warmer than outside
70+ year old lady next to me was a heck of a shot with Keltec 9mm
Range guy said all the brass you want to pickup on the floor is yours!!
Rather strict on the one hour, will charge more if over
No lines at 10:51am
Other shooters were polite, safe and skilled
Prices on ammo were fair market + 15%
Firearms / Accessories were fair market + 15-20% (TLR-1 $138.99)
Gun counter guys not knowledgeable or had communication issues
Had complementary spotting scope on stall wall (don't know what kind)
Not restricted to their ammo, can bring own

My Shooting:

Again, no mechanical failures or stutters of any kind. I was shooting some of my better groupings because of the pressure the elderly lady next to me was putting up I did have some issues toward the end of a magazine. My experience and formal training have been with rifles; I am use to the extended rhythm and breathing. I swear I was light headed toward 11 or 12 rounds deep after trying to breathe out half and hold for each or every other round. Any suggestions for medium fire frequency and breathing patterns? I was able to slow fire 2" at 10yrds; at 15yrds I was hitting around 4-5" groupings. When I upped it to medium rate I was hitting 3-4" at 10yrds and 7-8" at 15yrds. Double taps were all over the place today and *rapid* as the range allows was poor.

I enjoyed the day despite the breathing issues, colder than enjoyable conditions and horrific prices. I'd give the range a 7.0 out of 10 and might knock it a bit lower if there was some competition around.

Hope yall get out on the line soon!

Thumbs down

Ive had similar issues with Reds. I went to a range in college station that was half as expensive and more than twice as nice. The prices they have listed online are wrong (theyre more expensive when you actually go in there). Their staff were nothing less than total A-holes to me, my friend, and my girl. The guy who rented out guns spent about 3 minutes shaking his head and saying how he didnt like my friends tattoo (maple leaf with texas flag colors, because he was born in canada and moved to TX). The sales staff continued to talk to eachother while we were standing in front of them waiting for assistance.

On another note, I'm rather new to shooting so I called Reds Pflugerville before I went down there with my friends. I asked them about the rental guns they had there and then if I could bring my own ammo to shoot (they said "thats fine"). They said I could, so 3 friends and myself bought over 125 bucks in ammo at walmart only to find out when we got there that we couldnt shoot it. None of us have guns, so our day at the range ended there.

I could not have been more upset with the quality of service at either of the reds locations (unless they had physically slapped me in the face). When I do get my XD, I will do anything I can to avoid giving them my money.

1/10 Score

Man, yall in the Austin area are pretty SOL when it comes to ranges.

I went to Red's when I was visiting a friend there. I'm not a fan of indoor ranges, but thats just me. The people were not very helpful, or knowledgeable. It also seems that they do not hesitate to stick a guy sighting in his .300 Win mag next to a guy trying to teach his children to shoot with a .22.
