Gosh. All these stories are getting me worried. I've been planning on shooting my new .30-06 out at a friends property, but I'm considering going to the range and not firing under 100 yards for safety's sake.

Don't be worried. Just be smart. Don't shoot a pile of metal with various angles, or a steel plate that sticking straight up & perpendicular to you. Just look at your setup before you shoot and see if you need to adjust it.

I don't know about the rest of the stories, but I'm pretty sure the only thing the OP was shot with was the putty he just fired at the moon.

Crude to be sure, but accurate non the less.

Jeebus christ!! What happened? When I first got my XD, a friend of mine told me that he knew someone who was attempting to strip his XD and didn't realize there was one in the chamber. When he pulled the trigger to get the slide off, he shot his left hand.

That is EXACTLY what happened to me. But I still swear I never pulled the trigger. The good news is I can still move my fingers somehow.

It looks like it was the opposite, but it came out my wrist.

And now we have a gruesome reminder of step one for cleaning a firearm. I hate to kick you while you're down, but since your palm's messed up and you cant fight back I'm going to. There's a chamber status indicator on the top. That was your first mistake. Not clearing the action was your second mistake. Having a loaded magazine in the weapon (the only way a round could have been chambered during the cleaning process) was your third. The list goes on, but I'm sure there a half dozen more spots where this could have been avoided. I say this not to your detriment but for the future benefit of those reading here.
Steps to clean your XD:
1. put all ammunition away
2. if there is a magazine in the weapon remove it and put it (and any ammunition it contains away)
3. check your chamber status indicator
4. lock the slide back and visually inspect the chamber to ensure the status indicator works.
5. repeat step 4.
6. with the slide locked back follow the process to field strip your weapon, with the noted caveat that you're going to check your chamber status indicator once more before pulling the trigger, and aim the weapon in a safe direction when releasing the slide.

I mainly posted that just to show people that think it can never happen to them.

I am hoping this next ten weeks of therapy will be a reminder for me everytime I pull it out. Be safe guys!
