Lethal bounce back ricochet story.
My uncle lost a friend when he was in his 20's due to a bounce back ricochet such as the ones mentioned above. Guy was shooting a 22 pistol in his back yard. Was shooting into a pine board which typically would swallow the 22's, It didn't swallow one of them and it came back and penetrated the ocular cavity and lodged in his brain. he died a couple hrs late at the hospital. I tell this story to all of my students to drive home a couple of points. #1. the obvious part about gun safety and a PROPER back stop, and #2 to remind them that even the lowly 22 round which is considered fairly innocuous by most folks in the firearms community is still lethal and should not be treated like a toy.

Glad you were ok. A reminder to wear your safety equipment even when shooting with people who are qualified.

The more I read about ricochets the more common it seems to be. I have taken shot making a triumphant return to me more than once. I have a few scars on my face one from 00 buck that penetrated my right cheek just below my shooting glasses. I thought it was a pimple. After a few days it was really infected and puss-filled. I lanced it and the piece of shot popped out and rattled around in the sink. Yet another reminder to wear your eye protection.
I have a ding on the toe of a boot where a rifle round came back after hitting some rock. Took my foot out from under me and I ended up face down in the dirt. I should really stay away from long guns.

I'm glad no one was killed or seriously injured during these event (the 22 story was a freak of nature) while at a range I was watching an event and they were shooting steel knock down targets bout 15 yds from where I was standing and I was hit by a piece of something that left a 1/2 inch cut on my right cheek freaked me out good.

Don't you hate when that happens? Glad to hear you are ok. Also glad to hear the guy who got hit by that 45 is ok, too.
I was minding my own business in my stall when some kids came in with a shotgun three stalls over. They couldn't handle it very well. They kept hitting the target holder and I guess the angled steel on the top of the range. Anyways, I got a nice pea sized welt on my stomach that hurt for four days from one piece of shot. I can only imagine how much a 40 or a 45 would hurt. They were told to leave. Now I leave for the member area whenever someone brings a shotgun to an indoor range. Aside from them being more annoying than a HOT LOADED 44Mag, but just in case...

When I was in the academy, a classmate got shot during firearms training week. We were all at the required safe distance back from the line except for the two shooters who were going at it hitting the steel pepper popper targets. A jacket separated from the core of a bullet and came straight back and caught my classmate right on the upper lip just under his nose. it cut him through the lip and into his gums! Freakin' nasty! Good thing it was only a piece of the copper jacket and not the whole round or he'd have been in deep poo poo. I still remember hearing the shrapnel hit him in the mouth as I was standing not two feet to his left. Man, that could've been me!

I got "shot" last night, again. It seems everytime we shoot a local match with steel poppers, I get nailed with a bullet fragment. I'm beginning to think I'm a giant magnet. I even stood behind a fat guy and still got hit.
