First Time out with my xd .40

Well, I went out to the range with my new xd .40 (service), and did decent. I definately didn't perform as well as I wanted it, and did shoot better with a different one that I had rented a few months back.

Overall, everything was a touch left. I'm right handed (and right eye dominant). Any suggestions?

Sounds like you could be using too much trigger finger. Try using only the first pad on your finger. Many times people use the first joint. I am speaking from experience on this one, and I am still working on it!

I thought the same thing, so I was really consious about it. I have always shot with the pad of my finger (that's how I was taught), so I'm really baffled. Maybe it was an off day for me. I was only about 1" left of center on average at that distance, so it's not horrible, but I personally want to be the best shooter I can possibly be.

I just got out yesterday with mine for the first time, definatly shooting low and left. Another guy out at the range offered some advise, including adjusting the sights. But he first recommended having someone else shoot it to find out if it was me or the gun. So, after he grouped two of two in the 10ring we both realized it was me, time for more practice. I was definatly pulling with the joint area of my finger so I will have to try the tip next time. The other shooter did say "wow, this feels good" as soon as he put it in his hand. Same thing I thought when I picked it up for the first time at the gun shop!

I have been having the same low/left problem.

I had an NRA instructor watch me yesterday, and I was anticipating recoil and dropping the muzzle. That was my biggest problem. As soon as I stopped doing that, I started shooting a lot better...still have a ways to go though. That is with my ported xd40

Anticipation of the round is the number 1 reason people don't shoot as well as they'd like. Jerking the trigger in anticipation is going to make everything go exactly where you DON'T want it. It takes some time to untrain yourself in doing that, but keep working at it, you'll get it.

I just put round 700 through my .40 service. This was my first handgun and I was an awful shot at round 1 and I could gradually tell my improvement each box I shot.

My main problem was anticipating the shot and jerking the trigger. After tons of rounds I have about got it where I want it. Just thought I'd share.

What distance? 15 yards or more, 1" is not a problem in my book.

The trigger will improve as you get a some rounds through the gun.

I was shooting 15 yards first time out. Funny how I thought that would be "easy" to hit center target, jokes on me! I did notice on the second box I started shooting better this may have been since it was 160g not 180g like the first box. Maybe a little less kick
