almost got barred :(
me and a friend we shooting at the metal targets at the outdoor range.
after a few hundred rounds we decided to move over to the paper target section. so we pack up and i had 1 magazine loaded in the bag, but my gun was in the case. we move over and thru the fence and i put my stuff on the bench. well i took out my 3 mags, 1 loaded and set them on the other table to shoot. i go back to get my XD and the range master was lookin at the loaded mag and asks, "are you a LEO?" "do you have a CCW?" i say NO and he goes to tell me its a misdemeanor in CA to transport loaded mags cuz they are considered "loaded guns". before he went on i interrupted and said "oh crap im really sorry, i know its illegal to have loaded mags in the car but i didnt know its illegal to have a loaded mag from that side of the range and walk to this one" he said "oh nevermind thats ok, but we don't tolerate that kind of lawbreaking here" learned a LOT from him after that. i unloaded questions and he went on about CA law loopholes and such. he went from bouncer mode to cool/joke mode haha. kinda glad i made that little mistake. anyways im bored and sippin on some wine sorry for the long post lol

The rangemaster was talking out his ass, it's perfectly legal to do what you did, especially at a range. I used to load up all my mags at home before I went and keep them seperate from the guns in the trunk. Tell him to quit driniking the PRK koolaid and get on www.calguns.net ,you'll learn more than you ever thought about CA gun laws. Of course, I haven't had to worry about those laws for the last 3 months living in the land of freedom Have a great gun carryin' Kenpo day Clyde |

I know exactly who you're talking about EJ. Semi-tall fellow with the sunglasses on who likes to talk out his ass about everything he thinks he knows about at Oaktree.
California gun ranges are weird, probably because they're so strict about a lot of things. You get guys like the one mentioned above who have been shooting for like 2 years or something and apparently they know everything. |

Just "GENERALLY" -- not state specific law, loaded magazines are viewed very much like loaded guns. In hunting a loaded mag is viewed like a loaded gun because the hunter need only slap the mag in the gun and it's loaded. Mostly this applies to guns in the car and "hunting from the vehicle" -- which is illegal in most states.
Same with "carry" . . . you carry an unloaded, concealed gun with a loaded mag "at the ready" and it's viewed as concealed carry of a loaded gun. This for the same reason as the loaded gun in the vehicle and hunting laws. But packing firearms and ammo, loaded mags around at a shooting range can hardly be viewed as "concealed carry." You're at a GUN RANGE. You can bet most of the people there are carrying a firearm one way or another. But as regards range safety. Most ranges want any gun that's not on the firing line to be unloaded. And that includes unloaded magazines. Local range here doesn't want handguns carried in holsters on the range -- loaded or not. (CCW is legal if you have a permit.)

Same deal in Maryland, a loaded mag is a loaded gun.

So I guess they would rather us carry them around by hand or in a bag since being in a holster is just way to dangerous to everyone around. I really wish I could understand the thought process of some folks. A holster is about the safest was to carry a firearm short of lugging around a safe with you everywhere.
