Happy newb at the range...

Well, just a little background first. I'm a 10yr Navy vet that has little experience in shooting. Qual'd on the 9mm and shotgun for a few years for some basic security duty, but no serious formal training.

My wife and I went to the range(first official time for both of us) on our anniversary and enjoyed it a lot. We decided to look into a home protection piece and after renting a number of guns we both liked the XD the best. So I picked up an XD40 Service this past weekend. Went to the range last night to put the first 100rds through it. I was pretty pleased. This was my most consistent round of shooting of the outing. All shooting was done at 7yds.

I'm so hooked that I went and bought another couple hundred rounds and hit the range again tonight. I tried a number of different things tonight. Taking my time, shooting faster in a decent rythm, different stances, one-eyed(what I've always done), and two-eyed. I was again pleased with my results, but a bit perplexed on how I did so decent. I know I have a problem with flinching/anticipating recoil and felt I did a bit better when I didn't pause and think about my shots for too long. I decided to try 20rds with both eyes open. I feel like this will take a TON of practice to get comfy with it. I could focus pretty decent on the front sight, but I was having a hard time seeing the target. I know that it'll be a little blurry, but I was almost seeing double at times. It would take a second or two after each shot to regain my sight picture. I'm not sure how much my astigmatism affects this? Here's my 7yd target, two-eyed, 20 rounds.

Basically, I think my results were pretty decent, but I know that my technique still leaves a lot to be desired. I'm hooked now and will keep at it. Can't wait to see my progress. Thanks guys.

Good job. What kind of bullet were you shooting? Those are nice clean holes!

Congrats on your new baby. I've got the same model and love it. Your targets look alot like mine when I first shot it and the following week on my second go at it. I found I was anticipating the recoil (Jack in the box syndrome) and was pushing forward to counteract the force. Of course, that put the muzzle down and all my holes were low. Clustered, but low. Just had to go back to basics...control breathing, slow squeeze on trigger, etc. Now I am back on the bullseye.
