Sound difference 1" of barrel makes

Sorry, couldn't really organize my thoughts into a proper title for this thread.

I have 2 XD-9s. A 4" Service and a 3" Sub-Compact.

I always use ear protection but I had read that "once in a while" you should fire a couple rounds without so that if you ever have to defend yourself you'll be ready for the sound.

So I blasted a couple rounds with the Service. CRACK!!! Loud, and I had a slight ringing in my ears but no a Major deal.

Then I went to the Sub... CCRRRAAAAACCCKKKKK!!!!!!!! It was so ****ing loud I almost dropped the gun. Same ammo. I was standing in the same place (outside range, under a pavillion). What if I had to use this in my house?

How do people ever shoot a 12 Gauge or .357 magnum? Damn that must hurt.

When you have to use it in a defensive situation, your mind/body will autmoatically go into a fight-or-flight state of being.

With all the extra adrenaline pumping through you, your focus is not on the sound. It will seem less loud at the time, although it really isn't.

Try shooting a .357 snub nose that has been ported. You my not wound your attacker, but the noise will make them deaf.

Longer barrels burn more of the powder, so you don't get the firecracker effect as much.

ps. That is like saying you should stab youself every once in awhile just to be prepared for your attacker having a knife. The only way I know to get used to the sound of a pistol going off, is to go deaf.

In spite of what you may have heard don't ever shoot without ear and eye protection. Disregarding common sense won't make you tougher.
