Confucius say: Man who shoots guns without ear muffs starts saying “WHAT?” a lot.

Don’t do it!

Are you saying what he's doing (firing without hearing protection for practice, or to know what to expect) is a good idea? If you want to shoot without hearing protection, inside or out, pay the tax and do the paperwork to get a silencer.

For the most part, people normally wear ear protection when they shoot. If they end up using their firearm for self defense they don't have the luxury of using ear protection and it's generally agreed that keeping your life while losing a little hearing is a good trade off.

Now the military is a different story. I think some use noise cancelling ear plugs which allow them to hear normal sounds but will reduce the risk of them losing their hearing, but like I said that's an entirely different topic.

I would think if you perform this test enough you'll come to realize the that noise difference isn't that noticeable between the sub and the service.

Its called auditory exclusion. You'll find that under a high-stress, adrenaline pumping event, your hearing will fall to the wayside. You'll also notice a small loss in fine motor skills, and it seems like time stand still.

If you're ever in an event where you are forced to shoot someone (home defense for instance) you'll likely not even remember the gun going off.

It's pretty common in the Law Enforcement world--many times officers cannot even re-call how many shots they fired. The only way to know is to count shell casings, or rounds left in the magazine...because they don't remember squeezing the trigger, the recoil, or the muzzle blast.

It's absolutely absurb to think you *need* to fire without hearing protection to "get used to it."

No seriously, good info here. Always wear ear protection.
