ALWAYS check your ammo...

Well kids, I did something a little stupid today, about an hour ago during our department range qualification. We are only allowed to carry a 9mm or .40 caliber sidearm, due to the supposed higher cost of other calibers. Our range ammo is obviously paid for by the department in bulk, and had been divided into two large bins - one with 9mm, and one with .40 (can you guess where my story is going at this point?)

Moving on, I load up my three mags, and head to the line with everyone else. We proceed through our quals, starting at 1 yard and moving back to 20, performing various drills along the way. Standard cop-type stuff. On the very last drill at 20 yards, we were instructed to draw, kneel, fire two shots center mass, tactically reload, stand back up and fire the last two shots center mass. The whistle blows, I draw, kneel, fire my first round, squeeze off the second and hear a dull *pop*.

....Sh!t

FTE. I looked down, and the slide wasn't quite at battery. Pull it back, an see a nicely fattened 9mm Luger casing firmly lodged in my XD40's chamber. Luckily it was the very last drill and didn't cause any hangups with the rest of the group, but it took me several minutes with my knife to get that damn casing out. I wish would have been able to keep it so that I could snap a picture or two, but when it came out it flew behind me, into an area where a whole bunch of other 9mm casings were sitting. It was cold out and I didn't feel like searching for it.

After a close visual inspection, I put another magazine through the gun just to make sure my chamber and extractor were ok. It performed without a hiccup.

Moral of the story? Always, ALWAYS check your ammo. Even when it was supposedly sorted and double checked by your rangemaster... I got complacent when loading my mags, and it could have cost me my extractor or barrel.

On a happier note, my range outing last night combined with today's qualification put me over the 500 round mark on my XD, with zero malfunctions (with the correct ammo, that is ), in just over a month. I love this gun.

Thanks for sharing the warning. Glad that nothing was wounded other than possibly some pride!

My pleasure. Any time you are using a community ammo bin, or any ammunition that you didn't physically procure and check yourself, check EVERY round that you load into the magazine. I did that very thing for the first couple of magazines, and was fine...but as soon as I got lazy, I got a mix up in my magazine.

Haha yes, only a little pride damaged, thats about it. At least the squib round hit the paper at 20 yards! Granted, it entered sideways and ripped a chunk of paper and cardboard out, rather than making a hole, and it was nowhere near the silhouette....but hey, I still hit the paper!

Another example of why we can't be too careful. Thanks for sharing the story.

I did it once when showing a Glock 26 and a 27 to a friend at the range. Luckily nothing happened; the round fired but I had to manually cycle the slide to eject the case. After that, I swapped out the 26 mag floorplates to a different color.

Also be glad that didn't happen to you during a time you had to draw your weapon to protect your self.

We were up at Pendalton doing some MOUT training and they were passing out blanks to the group infront of us.

Luckly someone was paying attention becuase he was loading blanks into his mag and noticed a green tip.

Took it out it was a live round that had somehow wound up in the blank can.

That group had to go though the course with no blanks going "BANG,BANG,BANG" my group got to have blanks though.
