tried out my DGR and hogue grips today

first off, this probably should be in the DGR forum, but since this post will contain more than my DGR experience i figured it'd be just as well posted here.

so i got in my car, with 250 rounds of remington FMJ's (the big yellow box from academy)
i drive all the way over to my fav range to find out.. their closed for repairs lol. so no funny idiot stories in this one.

so i head back to the range down from my house that charges $12.50 an hour (i had only planned on being there one hour anyway).
having recently installed the hogue slip on grips this last friday, and installing my new DGR & #18lb spring i was really anxious to try these out.

so i pin up my target, and load my mags, and i'm off and shooting. about my 5th mag in (roughly 80-90rnds in) i get a Failure to Feed. i'm thinking hmm. clear it and i'm shooting again, it happens again before i get through my next magazine, and then the following one after that. so i remove the DGR and spring and swap in my original from SA. i then blaze through the rest of the ammo with no problems.. untill my last two magazines
i got one FTF in each of the last two with the stock spring.

i'm gonna go ahead and blame the ammo. and my numbnut self for bringing something other than my normal rounds i usually shoot especially when i'm trying a new part out like this.
the rounds look like the nose of the bullet was sticking to my feed ramp, and my fingers looked worse than when i shoot my friends .45.

i'll say this though, the gun deffinately had a different feel to it with that DGR and #18 spring. i liked it alot. was really chewing the target up, with only the occasional flyer.

the hogue grips.. well what can i say. Awesome. really filled out the grip nicely for me, and cant wait to put more ammo down range with these babys on. even my wife held my gun right after i put them on, said she liked the way it felt. gonna get some hogue grips for her Beretta M9 too.

my groupings are getting better, i'm having less flyers, but still it seems i have to blow a mag or two out before i get "comfy" sighting in, i'm hoping i get to where i can just load a mag and hit the center mass first time out eventually.

one day i'll get a digital camera and post some target pics, but till then, i'll buy more ammo and practice

cheers

humm, im still mulling the thought over of getting a DGR myself, based on your report, im not sold as to getting one. I dont have any expierence with that ammo you brought with you, but prior to your DGR, you never had a FTF correct?

hum, mixed feelings from this report...didnt get the confidence boost I was looking for

i've fired Remington UMC Hollow points, and now i've shot the FMJ target loads.

the previous failer to feed with remington happened with hollow points on the stock spring assembly from SA back when i first got my gun.
thinking it was a fluke i paid it no never mind, and then proceded to shoot about 1000 rounds out of her from various other mfg's with the stock SA assembly.
so today, i tried the Rem FMJ's and theres that FTF again. i seriously think it was the ammo.
i go to the range twice a week, and i'll likely go again towards the end of this week with my usual Monarch brand ammo i shoot, and post back up here.

if you do want the guide rod, get it. if you dont like it, post it up for sale in The Trading Post here on the forum, you wont have a hard time getting rid of it i'm sure.

#18lb

www.pistolgear.com will have it in the drop down menu for you to order proper.

every gun has its preference of ammo it will chew through with no problems. i think mines weakness is remington in general. my hands where filthy black, so was the entire top of my slide. the thing that makes me mad is i usually clean mine right after my trips to the range, but i have to get ready for work in a bit, and dont have time, so she gets to sit there till i get home tonight.

one things for sure. gonna dump the remington hollow points i been sitting on, and get some winchester jhp's next week.

cheers

i have the XD 9 service btw so if you have the tactical 5inch it may be different.

Got ya, and from what I read in your other post, it came nice and fast to your door. I like that. It pretty much assembles like your stock one correct? ( i know there is a vid, but havent had time to watch it)

i also need to start using different ammo to get an idea of what mine likes and dislikes. Ive only put Winchester FMJ's through her.. I guess that is the ammo it likes (550 rounds no probs).

go with what works, if you've fired 550 rounds of WWB thus far with no probs, take that to the range with you.
i can highly recommend Monarch brand (the one without the coating) as a good alternative. nice clean rounds, with not a ton of residue. and cheap. hell cheaper than WWB from walmart. you can get monarch from Academy.

Thanks, ill be looking for Monarch my next range trip.

WWB does work, and will prob almost always use that, but would like to get a feel and an idea of other ammo.

how is that blazer stuff, with the aluminum casings? thats the cheapest around these parts at around 11.99 for 50
