First 100 rounds

Hi. I'm a long time lurker first time poster. I have been serching for a good 9mm compact handgun for over a year now and after much research I settled on the XD-9 3" sub compact. I have owned a few handguns over the years, but I usually bought used. If I was going to put up to $500 down on a new gun, I wanted it to be good.

Just a quick story on when I purchased the gun. I knew what I wanted when I walked in the store. A guy next to me was also shopping for a handgun, looked at a few different models and settled on a glock. I came in asking for an XD and while the gun store I go to usually has them in stock, he was all out. The guy buying the glock tried to to sell me on glocks by saying, hey its only a few buck more, it's a better gun and they have them in stock. I politely said I rented a few guns including the Glock and XD and while the Glock is a good gun, I personally like the XD better. The funny thing was the gun shop owner said he was sorry that he could not even show me his display model of the 9mm since someone bought that from him. He said he didn't even have any .45 XDs. All he had was one .40 compact and one .357 Sig on display. The Glock guy was going to chime in again, when the clerk said he is always ordering more, but it is hard to keep them in stock. He earmarked a 9mm Xd subbie for me and a week later in came in. I assumed Glock were more popular, boy was I wrong.

Anyway I took the gun home, broke it down and cleaned it. Easy to do and everything seemed solid. I took it to the range with some wal mart WWB JHP one box of 115gr and a box of 147gr. I actually shot the range gun better, but I think it was the ammo and that I was excited. Everything hit but just a little bit to the left of center. The XD subbie does have a lot of muzzle flip, especially when I tested one Glaser round, but otherwise I liked it a lot. I'm going to try Remington UMC FMJ (which is what I used with the range gun) and maybe some Federals hydrashoks next time.

My only beef was when I took it home and broke it down to clean it, the finish rubbed off the barrel. I know its inside the gun, but now it doesn't look brand new anymore. I was hoping that Springfield's new melonite finish would hold up a little longer than 100 rounds.

Glad to hear you got the XD. The accuracy will come when it's broken in. SA says it take around 500 rds to break it in. Probably why you shot the range gun better.

As far as the Melonite finish, the black is just the color part. Melonite, aka Tennifer, is a metal salt-nitride bath treatment. It actually conditions down in to the metal, so even if the black wears the protection is still there. The only way to get rid of it is to remove a LOT of metal, which would destroy the gun completely.

I've got 300 rounds through my XD but I been trying to stock up on ammo all week long for my Friday shooting. Can't wait to hit that first break in period and feel the difference in how it shoots. And than even though I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with how it shoots, it's off to Springer Precision

Just curious with the muzzle flip issue, does it improve if you hang a light or a laser on the rail? Give me an excuse to buy one. If I got the 4" compact instead of the 3" sub would the flip be better, worse, or the same?

I get no flip on my subby. Work on your grip.
the video over at http://www.springerprecision.com/video.asp Basic Grip is a great place to start.
You won't work the slide lock accidentally, and you'll have a really strong grip, so followthrough will be immediately felt.
