Range today
Went to the range today for the 2nd time since I got the XD (Service 9mm). I had been going through withdrawal since I just got back from Vegas and picked the gun up before I left (2 weeks ago or so) and haven't had a chance to shoot much. My roommate went with me along with another friend of ours (local LEO) and his little brother. Altogether, I put 224 rds. through today and they did another 150 for a total of 374. Shot 250 rds. of Remington 115 gr. UMC, 100 rds. of 124 gr. Blazer Clean Fire FMJ, and 24 rds. of 124gr. Speer Gold Dot JHP (had 40 but wanted at least 1 mag full of SD rds.). No problems whatsoever. She ate everything perfectly although she was getting quite warm there at the end (374 rds. in 45 minutes, what can you expect?). My LEO buddy now wants to pick one up. He loves the gun and actually called his issue Glock 21 a POS in comparison (a bit strong I think). Looks like my roomie may be picking one up in a few months as well. He's firing a Hi-point .380 that we just got done tuning up (polishing feed ramp, fluff & buff on mags). I recommended it to him as a good first gun to get used to having one around and making sure he wanted it before spending an arm and a leg. Also to help him with trigger control as he wants to push with 9mm and larger. Anyway, just wanted to post up my experiences. Can't wait to go back in the next week or two and put another couple hundred rounds down range.
On a related side note, what kind of grouping do most of you get with a stock XD? I got 1" groups at 5 yds with the Speer except for one flyer which I'm attributing to being the last rounds of the day and my arm beginning to tire and 2-2.5" with the Blazer at roughly 13 yds. I was just kind of curious. |

It depends what target I am using too. If I use that small NRA Slow Fire 25' target my groups tighten up.

With my service, I'll shoot out a 2.5" diameter circle at 50 feet. 25 feet about the same. I never really tried shooting into anything smaller than a circle of that size. Once I get a big hole going, I start aiming to tear more and more paper off.
In either event, you sound like you're doing well. The same thing happened to me with the service, then I got my sub-compact and of the three people I let shoot that, 2 got one and 1 wants one lol.

My first pistol was an XD-9 Service, followed by a XD-9 SC...followed by a full-size Kimber 1911. My total shooting experience between these guns now stands around 5000, and at 10 yards, I generally average a 2" group. 15 yards is about 3 - 4". This is assuming slow-fire, 10-shot sets (or 8-shot sets for the 1911). Getting these kind of groups would not be possible for me at this stage without the kind advice of many people in this forum.
I mostly use S&B 115 gr. FMJ and Fiocchi 230 gr. FMJ. I've also used WWB 115 gr. / 230 gr. FMJ as well as some Blazer Brass. Ammo doesn't seem to make a difference in my groups. (disclaimer: my XDs have a Springer Precision trigger job though, so it's not completely stock) |
