Low and Left....
I shoot fairly well with my xd 45 tac., but i keep shooting low and left. I've seen the many sheets on what you might be doing wrong if you shoot in different areas, but I don't think i am doing these. my groups at 10 yrds are pretty good, but still left of center. when i move out to 25 yrds obviously it gets worse. any suggestions?

All of us didn't think it was "us" that was causing our problem either. Have a range master or someone who is a good shot shoot your gun, taht means one that can back it up with his shooting.. not just someone who claims they are because they think so. Most likely it has to do with the way you are holding your gun, or how you are pulling the trigger. Do you dry fire ever? You can easily see if you are moving the gun to the side when you squeeze the trigger. Sometimes when pulling the trigger, you tend to tighten your grip.. this will move the sights. Dry fire lots and mess with your grip a bit, tighten it if needed. Try placing your finger on the trigger different. Keep the pad on the trigger, but move it toward the tip, or back toward the joint a little at a time until you stop moving the sights when dry firing. I was one who thought it can't be me that's causing the problems with my shots being off. Now I can hit mostly center after practicing lots.

Try using this target next time out. This really works, and it's a cheap, good target.

yep right handed shooter like you shooting low and left .....anticipating recoil and ill bet using to much trigger finger or jerking slightly anticipating a recoil. Check this out too does not ever hurt to go back to a little basic drill.http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ayoob85.html

So you shoot with your right hand, and are right eye dominant, correct? Most likely you are flinching, and need to work on your trigger control. Flinching can't always be cured, but you can make it so you don't do it as often. Buy some dummy rounds and mix them in with the rounds in a magazine, or better yet have a friend mix a few in so you have no clue where they are. If you are shooting, and pull the trigger and all you get is a click, if you move the muzzle down you are flinching. Dry fire too. Make sure the gun is unloaded, and then make sure again. With the first pad on your trigger finger, play around with where you position the trigger on it. Usually somewaht centered is best, at least for me but you may need to pull more with toward the tip, or toward the first joint of the finger.
Keep dry firing until you can pull the trigger and not move the gun in teh process, or move it after you have pulled the trigger. Don't be afraid to grip the gun tight too. Lots of times at least in my experience, the movement of the gun was caused by my grip tightening when I was pulling the trigger. Try this... make a loose fist and keep your trigger finger out like you're going to fire a gun, then just move only the trigger finger in and out. More than likely your other fingers move too. Now tighten your grip, and then move the trigger finger like you're firing a gun.. probably don't move the others now right? When you tighten your grip when pulling the trigger, it's going to move the sights. When you are shooting, stare at the front sight. You know the sights are on target, so once you get that just stare at the front sight. Target will be blurred. Keep staring at the front sight until after you have fired the shot. Don't try and watch where the bullet is going to hit, if you do that you tend to start chasing that hole and your shots seem to land near it. So focus on teh front sight, give a consistant pull back on the trigger until it fires and keep trying to stare at that front sight until the muzzle drops back down. I practiced all of this quite a lot and it helped me so much. I got my gun january 6th, and wasn't the greatest shot. about 1800 rounds later I've finally got it figured out and can pretty consistantly make good shots. It just takes time and practice. |

I have that problem as well. What I do is after emptying a magazine I dry fire a few times with it cocked and of course I'm always jerking it downward when I press the trigger. As for shooting left I can see that my sights are off. Won't be a problem once I send it in to have FO sights installed.
