XD 40 Service Range Report

I took my XD for its 4th trip to the range. I put 150 rounds through it yesterday, bringing its total to 450 rounds. I've gotten an FTF at every trip I take to the range so far, and this week was no different. It was only one, and it came on the 12th round of the 7th magazine I shot. I was firing CCI Blazer Brass.

My wife put 150 rounds through her PT111 Millenium Pro usuing WWB. This was our third range trip with the Taurus and it has yet to experience a problem.

I clean the pistols after each range trip. Right now, I trust the Taurus more than the XD, although I vastly prefer the XD.

Is there anything anyone can think of that would cause the FTF? I know I'm not limp wristing it, and it only happened once this time. Am I right in being concerned?

What was the exact problem you encountered?

The cartridge did not fully load. The cartridge was tilted upward and the slide was pushed up against it. I removed the mag and round, re-loaded it into the mag and it loaded and fired fine.

There are three possible causes that I can think of:

1. Bad magazine
2. rough feed ramp
3 rough chamber

Solutions

1. try different mag
2. polish ramp (rather inexpensive)
3. rough chamber
keep shooting, will probably fix itself
polish chamber (not overly expensive)

Don't use blazer. I had the exact same problem over and over again. Shot 3 other types of ammo and no problems at all. Hopefully the gun will wear a little bit and I won't have to worry about what ammo I have when I pull the trigger.

My XD had a rough and tight chamber. I had some failures to extract about 1-2% of the time.

I polished the chamber with my Dremel using a felt wheel and Flitz. I've not had any FTE after polishing (knock on wood).

I've put about 700 rounds through the XD since polishing.

I shot my new XD-40 Sevice last night for the fist time and I had an identical failure. It was on the 15th of 20 rounds. Last round in the mag (I was loading them 5 at a time). Factory Remington ammo (though rather old, probably 10 years, no signs of corrosion on the brass).

I had a problem with feeding on my XD 40sc. I was loading 6 rounds into the sub magazine and after I fired the third round the fourth would fail to feed everytime on two different types of ammo. Springfield replaced the mag for me since the full size mag had no problems. I purchased a new sub mag and didn't have the same problem, but had one fail to feed on my last trip. A friend of mine bought a new SIG 9mm. He was constantly having problems with the feeding, ammo didnt matter, nor did magazine or anything. He was about to have the gunshop swap out the gun. The shop called the sig rep and was told that it was probably a real tight gun. It should loosen up around a thousand rounds, and be a better gun for it. The rep was right, at about 900 rounds all the problems on his SIG went away and he is loving his new 9mm ( he is a detective and carries it everyday). He is also very confident in his gun. So my point is I agree, less than 1000 rounds is still part of the breakin time. I am not worried about my one fail to feed on my last trip. I think I am still breaking the gun in. I have about 250 rounds through my gun at this time. Good luck.
