Can ammo make that big of a difference?

I put 200 rounds through my XD last Saturday. I shot the Remington FMJ 230 gr and my groupings were not that great at 25 yards. In fact it was shooting about 5 inches to the left. However I switched to the Federal Hydro shock and the accuracy changed dramatically. The groupings were very tight and on target at the same distances. I never changed my stance or sight picture. Can ammo really make that kind of difference.

P.S. My XD 45 shoots so smoothe!!!!
