After 3,775 Rounds, the XD40SC finally let me down

Picked up the gun December 27th, 2005 and it broke it this morning at the range. Right after I finished bragging about it to the Glock guy in the next booth -- must be karma.

I'll call Springfield Monday morning and see if their customer service really is that good.

Sorry, yep.

Here's how it went down:

Gun went boom, and didn't feed. Looked down, saw no obstructions, racked the slide, and it was stuck. Hmmm..... Tried to lock the slide back and the lock moved...... that's no good.....

What a lousy way to end a trip to the range.

Haven't seen a release lever let loose on here before, have you?

Woa, so the slide release lever is actually a lever. That is the first pic I've seen up close of most of the slide release. Sorry for your loss Seems like a hefty karma price for bragging hehe, though I'm sure S.A. can work something out with the XD40. (parts policy)

Called Springfield this morning and they're sending the part to me this week.

Does that surprise anybody? I was under the impression I'd have to send it to them.

Any chance the stop got thumbed up at the same time the gun fired? Looks like there was force exerted on it in a rearward direction. Kind of a freaky thing to break.

sdfson:

The broken piece of the slide lock displaced forward and jammed up the slide. I had to put some tension on the slide so I could push the piece back in place. I had a devil of a time getting the gun apart without the ability to lock the slide back. Once I removed the broken piece, I didn't try to fire the gun, but I'm confident it would function just fine. It just won't lock back on an empty magazine.

jeepguy:

It's possible, I suppose, but I think unlikely. I've got small hands and keep a very firm grip with thumbs pretty low. I've never had a problem hitting the slide release before, and my normal grip keeps the thumbs well clear fo the slide release. Very much a freaky thing to break.

In the full res pictures, it looks more like a bad casting. You can see some voids or pits in the lever on the end of the break. My dad claims to see some rust as well, but I just didn't see it.

Also notice in the picture just under the locking block, when the broken piece of the lever displaced forward, it gouged the frame pretty good. I'm going to follow up with Springfield on that damage as well.
