XD 9mm 5" - Broken extractor (x2)

Got about 25 rounds into my shooting session yesterday and the extractor on my XD 9mm 5" broke. This is the 2nd time this gun had done this to me, no other failures, just the extractor twice. Now, I am not -too- upset as the pistol has had 50,000 rounds through it, and I figure something has got to give sooner or later. But it got me to thinking.

I am using a 22 lb recoil spring, and I wonder if the extractor is being put under extra strain by the heavier spring. I don't think that's the case since all the extractor has to do is drag the case out of the chamber, and the recoil energy operating the slide should simply be pushing on the breech face via the base of the case. But as I have had 2 broken extractors (the only breakages on the gun to date), and the only other mods to the gun are that guide rod and recoil spring, I figured I'd see what the rest of the gang thought.

Thanks,

Zett

Do you pictures of the extractor? I wonder if the 22lb. spring is putting things out of time...

No, sorry, no pix. I pitched it when I put the new extractor in. But the extractor broke perfectly right along the line where the case is. It looks like what would happen if the rim of the case just cut right through the extractor.

Do you have a practice of loading one in the chamber via hand then releasing the slide vs. racking the slide to load a round from the mag.?

No, I never hand feed the chamber. Bad mojo. Very bad mojo.

It probably would not be a bad idea to have SA look at it. 50,000 is up there and if you use this for HD, it would be nice to have that piece of mind.

Don't worry about it. You have another 25,000 rounds before you have to replace it again.

Yes, may just be a case of "the expected lifespan of the extractor is 25,000 rounds". Pretty respectable lifespan actually. Now I just have to figure out a way to get XD parts without shipping the gun back to the factory. I may as well be trying to find Unobtanium.

Thanks for the opinions.
