XD-9 Service "Break In" Range Report
I have or have had* an XD-9SC, *XD-40SC, XD-45ACP and now XD-9 Service.
They are all great guns. I recently sold my XD-40SC and purchased an XD-9 Service to replace it. I shot 200 Rounds of WWB for my XD-9 Service break in period today. I cleaned/lubed the pistol prior to firing. I polished the barrel and replaced the stock guide rod with a DGR and 18# spring before firing shot one. I used the black bushing...I thought it looked better. Pros- -Amazingly Accurate -VERY manageable recoil...This thing is gentle. -Stock Trigger feels better than my early '05 SC's did out of the box...this pistol was made at the very end of '05 -XD's just feel gooood to shoot! Cons- -Same crap finish....after seeing the finish on the new .45ACP the old looks even worse! -I had my first FTE!!! I had a 16 round mag in and was firing at about 1 round/second and the slide comes back like it's locked open and I go to drop the mag. I look down and there is a case halfway in/out of the chamber where the ejector let go of it. The 16th round is still in the mag. I made sure the slide was locked back and dropped the mag. The casing dropped right out of the chamber. I looked at it and it basically looked like the ejector just slipped around the casing. I realise that this is in the first couple hundred rounds and probably isnt a big deal. I was just really bummed that I had a failure of ANY type, but I guess it had to happen sooner or later. Out of the 4 XD's I own(ed) this is the FIRST one to have any FT Anything! I kind of wish that I had not used the DGR until after it's "200 Round Break In" but I didnt. In NO WAY am I saying that my FTE had ANYTHING to do with the DGR...I imagine that would be highly unlikely but I should have tried it out bone-arse stock first. Out of the approx. 2800-3000 rounds I have now fired through all of my XD's 1 failure isnt bad is it? I guess I shouldnt be too cranky right?

Rule number 1. Don't fix what ain't broke. Changing things on a gun you have never fired might work but as you have just experienced it might not. Of course if it's just a range gun then it don't matter. Don't ever do that to a carry gun.

This will be a "sometimes" carry gun and will be the regular nightstand gun while I'm not home for my girlfriend If I'm not carrying it so I DO need it to be 100% reliable. If you could clarify your statement I would appreciate it. Thanks OEF.

I just shot 300+ rounds (WWB, Remingston UMC, Federal Hydrashock) (on 2 different range trips) on my 100% stock out of the box new XD9 Bi-Tone Service. No FTE's or FTF's. Oh yeah my gun was made in 12/2004. So it's been on the shelves for a while.
I cleaned my gun one time so far with Breakfree CLP. Try the stock configuration for a while and test the reliability of that versus the DGR. Then decide.

DJDAN,
I wouldn't be too concerned with one FTE unless it continues to do so next time shooting. I would speculate that your extractor may of built up some residue and finally worked it's way off. It's also posible that your shell casing around the rim could of had some dirt, ding, dent,or slightly out of spec(doesn't take much and probably wouldn't even notice it anyway)which caused the problem.
