XD9 and S&W .500 magnum 4" ported

Went to the range this morning for the first time in two months and boy was my shooting starting to drop off. I started off with my 10/22 and did fine, moving to the XD9 I noticed that I was shooting left and a a little low. After about 50 rounds or so I was able to get back in the groove and start shooting the center of the target. This was all done at 7-10 yards. Then I got the brilliant idea to rent the .500S&W Magnum with a 4" ported barrel and hogue rubber grips. It was a "rental special" $5 to rent the gun and $2.55 per round. I figured I might as well shoot a full 5 shot cylinder; the first shot I fired with the full double action pull, I must have been really anticipating the recoil because at 10 yards the shot was about 6-7 inches below point of aim. the next shot I cocked the hammer and BANG!! dead on in the 10ring. the next one was low at the 7 ring, and the next two were 9 and 10 ring. I have never seen a muzzle flash so big from a handgun, nor have I ever felt such recoil. I thought that the .50AE Desert Eagle was a powerful gun to shoot, it is nothing compared to the .500mag. My thumb joint is still sore from the shooting experience but it sure was fun. It took me a while to get back to proper shooting with the XD9 after that though, but recoil from the 9mm which I've always found to be extremely easy going almost felt as though I were shooting a .22lr after shooting that big gun. Pictures to come later tonight when I get back from my girlfriends house.
