45 gap, failures to feed
i purchased a new XD 4" in 45 gap in late december, and over the last 7 weeks, i would estimate i've run about 500 rounds through it.
i would also estimate that i've had approximately 12 to 15 failures to feed, where the gun fires a round, ejects the spent cartridge, still has plenty of rounds remaining in the magazine, but the slide release somehow catches and prevents the gun from chambering the next round. granted, this is still a small percentage of the total number of rounds fired, but the REAL problem is that it is increasing in frequency. i had no such failures for the first 130 or so rounds, and only 1 round failed to feed during that first trip to the range. i attributed the first mis-feed to the gun being brand new, and at that point was quite dirty (45 gap is a very dirty round compared to my 357 sig). the next 20 rounds after the first mis-feed were trouble-free. i've always given my weapons a thorough cleaning & lube after each trip to the range, so i don't know what the problem could be. but i literally had 2 mis-feeds on the same magazine today. it has happened regardless of the type of ammunition. at the range, i only use factory new FMJ from federal, speer, or winchester. other than that, i have had no other problems with the gun. it's accurate as hell, and a joy to shoot. i was consistently wearing out the bullseyes from 10 yards today at the indoor range. i just wish i wouldn't have had to depress the slide release an extra 4 times today during 100 rounds of fun. sorry this was so long-winded.... is anyone else having a similar problem? |

How dirty is the gun? Has it been cleaned? How thorough is thorough? Is your thumb accidentally hitting the slide stop? Trying the simple things first..

a good quality solvent and oil, nylon toothbrush, patches, cleaning rod, brass brush for the bore, etc. etc. the gun is clean..... and i clean it after every trip to the range, along with my other guns. i already thought about my thumb possibly coming into contact with the slide stop. the last trip to the range i completely ruled that out as a possibility, and yet the problem persists. |

The only other solution I can offer you is to call Springfield and send it back for an evaluation. Has someone else fired the gun to rule out user error? I know you said it isn't you but just for giggles.

yes, i've had 4 other people fire it, and it's had a few mis-feeds while they were shooting it.
i've sent an email to springfield, and i'll probably give them a phone call tomorrow. i'm not worried about it, as the warranty will cover this. i was just wondering if other people were having similar problems, and from what i've seen while reading this site, apparently a couple other people have experienced this as well. hopefully springfield can fix it. it's a nice gun. |

Hello,
I have just purchased a new XD 45 ACP and having the same problem, but you guys are great and I think I have figured out the problem. I had a couple of these with my XD357, but my wife never had a misfeed of any type. Then 021411 says are you resting your thumb so it may rest on the slide stop and I bet that is what I am doing!!!! People think I get silly about the research I do when I get involved with hobbies or interest in general, but I learn so much from reading post from sites like this. I guess it is the fact I am a pretty humble gut (thanks to older brother to attribute to my humbleness) and I not thinking I know everything. Especially from this web site I have learned much. Thanks because I was so dissapointed in the misfeeds because this 45 ACP is such a joy to shoot compared to the XD357. Hey the 357 was great, but like I said the 45 ACP fills like a big fat softball and easy to shoot. |

The only time my GAP has a FTF is when I fire it from a rested position. If I rest my forearms on a rest and fire like that I will have FTF's. This is because I subconciously "limp-wrist" when I shoot like this.
If I fire standing up, non-supported, it will fire all day long with out a hiccup. Are you firing from a rested position? Are you limpwristing? Have you done any mods to your gun like a heavier spring?

no limp wristing, no mods

Any chance your magazine lips are bent or your magazine spring is boogered up and not allowing the round to fully extend to the top of the mag? This might trigger the slide lock as if the mag was actually empty. Only thing I can think of at the moment.
