Updated range report for XD45ACP
Well I had an opportunity to run another 200 rounds of UMC FMJ ammo through the XD45 and as expected, it ran flawlessly. No failure of any kind. One change I did notice is that the accuracy has improved a bit since my first session with this pistol. My usual routine is that I start out at around 20 ft. and gradually move back to 30-35 ft. - I occaisionally go past these distances, but not too often since 99% of confrontations happen within 20-25 ft. One thing I also tried was to go from shooting with one eye closed to both eyes open - that is definitely going to take some getting used to. Anyway, all but a few of my rounds hit center mass which is fine by me.
Once again, SA has come through with an amazing firearm at a reasonable price. If they would just come to their senses on the parts thing, all would be well in my world. The downside to the new XD45 is that I running through lots of expensive ammo - looks like it is time to start learning how to reload! |

Reloading is the only way to go when you start burning up a lot of 45ACP. Hope you have been saving your brass.

Brass
You are right about the expense. I bought a bunch of UMC .45ACP for about $7.00 per 50 rounds at Dick's when it was on sale. Before I got the XD45, I used to shoot mostly 9mm. Now that I'm shooting mostly 45, I checked on ammo this past week and it was around $12-14 per 50 round box. Ouch!! And yes, I have been saving the brass.

Now it's time to decide what reloading gear to get and you are on your way.

Not to take away from reloading, but I bought Winchester 230gr FMJ Target rounds from Walmart for abour $19 for 100 rounds. They shot well, I even swapped in some Federal Hydroshocks alternating throughout the magazines and didnt notice a difference in accuracy. Im not real sure, but i think reloading the .45 ACP will cost more than .19 cents per round.

Reloading per round:
.06 cents for cast lead bullet. .017 cents per primer. .015 cents for powder. Use hulls from previously fired ammo: This comes to .092 cents per round or $4.60 per box of 50. That comes to 200 rounds of hand loads for every 100 round WWB value pack you purchase. Great savings. Now one must also factor in the cost of the reloading equipment, but no good hobby is without some cost. Glad I don't play golf! |

So I can get almost 500 rounds for each of your 100.

Yeah yeah I saw that after I submitted it...
Ok, so your math is right, however...it still costs you $9.20 per hundred rounds. Which is only $10 dollars cheaper. But, how long does it take, start to finish to reload 100 rounds? And is that time worth $10? I personally would prefer to spend the extra $10 and spend my time shooting the bullets. Now I also think that reloading is a great hobby if you have the expendable time, me, I have 5 kids, so its hard enough for me to squeeze in time to go shooting. The question about time to reload is a 2 sided question, one: what's your time worth, and two: I dont really have a clue how long it takes, or what all is involved.

Kauzi,
Check out the reloading portion of this and other forums and you will get a better appreciation of what goes on in the reloading world. Ive got a Dillon 650XL and it will reload more than a couple hundred rounds an hour. I've been reloading for many years and it is a hobby. Once you start shooting a lot and begin using different calibers, then it becomes very cost effective for the larger calibers. I'm at the point where it really is cheaper for me time and $$$ wise to just buy WWB value packs in 9mm for plinking. When I go to the range, I'll go through a few hundred rounds of various calibers so that $10.00 a box savings can really add up over time. Speaking of time, with five children, I can imagine your time is at a premium and if you can afford it, the WWB value pack is the a good alternative on your part. Have a great day. |
