Light for XD Service

I have the XD9 Service and want to get a light for the rail.

First... the Insight X2 vs. SA XML... what's the difference?

And second: Are these specifically designed just for the XD Sub? I thought I heard somewhere that they are. Do they also properly mount on the 4" XD's? If not, any recommendations on the larger type lights?

Thanks

Since you have the Service model, I would suggest you give the Insight Technologies M3, M3X, M6, or M6X a try. They all fit nicely on the XD Service model, are well made, reliable, and I have found them to be relatively well priced when compared to surefire illumination devices (though surefire makes awesome weapons lights as well, and you wouldn't be disappointed if you went in that direction instead). I have tried several different illumination devices on my pistols, and the one I happen to be using now is the IT M3X........it's a tuff little light, with a well focused beam, is weather resistant, has nice controls, and snaps on perfectly to the XD service model (not to mention it costs about $150...give or take a few bucks depending where you buy from....just do a google on it and you should find plenty of stores). The SA XML is a bit smaller than the the lights I mentioned above, but the nice thing is that it fits the subcompact xd line. Hope this helps, and good luck and have fun dressing up that new XD9!!

I have a Surefire X-200, and if cost wasn't an issue, at $250 , it's more then half the cost of an XD, that's what I would get.
I got mine off a prize table at a match, or I wouldn't have ever payed that much for a light.

The XML is a great light, i had one, but is really only good on the SC. It's a bit short on a full size frame. I use an Insight M3 that fits my tactical real well and is damn bright.

Well I got the XML yesterday from Midway for $89. Good price, I thought.

It is a very nice light but you're right, it doesn't really fit right on the Service. The switch is just out of reach of your fingers. I slid mine all the way to the rear, toward the trigger guard. That's nice because then it is flush with the muzzle instead of sticking out forward. Problem is, the cross notch for the locking mechanism isn't engaged when you do that. I wish SA had installed that cross notch (or an additional one) further back so you could lock that light in the proper place.

Anyone cut their own notch? I don't want to make it look like a butcher job though. Advice? AJames are you there?

SA did address this. The newest gen(3rd?) frame has the second notch. Not that it helps you. I would think you could add the notch with reasonable results. Folks on the site have cut down service grips to sub-compact length with good results, at least from the pictures. Careful work with a small file should do it. PM me if you would like measurements on the factory second notch.

I looked closely at the gun. It would seem that it should be easy enough to file down but there is a major problem!

The aluminum piece with the serial number is in the way! The groove needs to be made rather deep, but the aluminum plate is very close to the surface. If I try to file it down, it would remove a portion of the serial number and that would make it an illegal gun, wouldn't it?

Anyone who has experience in doing this please respond!!
