word of caution unsafe sear

I'm making this post because the company selling this sear knows that it is unsafe and they are continuing to falsely advertise it as safe. I have called them and explained the issues to them and have given them ample time to resolve this on their own.

This "sear" is one piece that replaces two pieces ie the factory sear and striker safety lever. By doing this they have eliminated the safety function of the striker safety in the slide.

The factory design allows the sear to rotate in one direction independently of the safety lever. With this set up, if the striker should skip over the sear the safety lever would not move the striker safety out of the way and the gun would not fire.

Below is a picture of the sear and the false advertisement. I have put the phrase in question in bold and underlined it.

This sear replaces the factory sear and striker safety lever. The XTech sear reduces pretravel and keeps all safeties fully functional. It is designed to be installed and fit by a professional gunsmith

Tactical Technologies

I'm all for competition. I think that it is good for the industry. It drives some of us to make new and better products. This however is a matter of safety.

This is important information and you shouldn't be shy about sharing it with the XD community.

BTW, If I want to send my XD9-SC to you for a combat trigger job, can I send it you you directly or do I need to go through a FFL?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.
[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]

In short, you can send it to him as he is a FFL (licensee) and he can send it back to you.

Anyone who knows how the XD works, know the product above is being advertised falsely. We've both talked to SA about the product as they know it is an "unsafe" (quote from SA) product and wanted to know who was making/selling it.

Thanks for the heads up on the unsafe sear. If this is true, the mods ought to sticky this thread.

I make the XTech Sear......

While both Powder River and Springer Precision sell XD parts as far as I know neither one of them is an engineer. Neither one, that I am aware of, is well known for their engineering or design skill's in the firearms industry.

Powder River has taken a standard modification of the factory XD safety lever (normally done by welding) and just included it in a new safety lever. Nothing wrong with this, we did the same thing on our first generation of sears, and early trigger bar designs.

Springer has basically just copied other peoples designs by buying the parts and taking them to a local machine shop and having them copied. That's ok too I guess.

Dave Williams has stated he doesn't like the XTech sear design because of the fact if the gun was dropped there is the chance that the sear would bounce releasing the striker and the fixed position safety lever would depress the striker block allowing the striker to go full forward striking the primer of a chambered round. Of course in order for this to happen the pistol would have to strike the ground hard enough to overcome the enagement pressure of both the sear and the striker spring which is a fair amount. Since the face of the striker is concaved it would have to hit hard enough to force the striker rearward in order to release the sear. And finally it would have to hit hard enough and at the right angle to also depress the grip safety which locks the sear into the engaged position preventing it from bouncing. I am not sure where you would have to drop it from but I am pretty sure it would have to be much, much higher then the height of the average (or unaverage) person. Like say a 30 store building. By the way, Mr. Williams, as a rep for Springfield recommends you don't use any aftermarket parts in your XD.

I am sure that we will hear from several people of this issue. Everyone involved will be jumping up and down screaming that everyone else is lying and full of s**t. But the bottom line is this, the XTech sear and the other XD products we make have been on the market for a while now with good success. Even Mr. Springer put his name on our parts and sold them before someone gave him enough money to copy them locally. In spite of rumours, started by our competition, our parts (Including the XTech Sear) have produced good value for a good price and continue to do so. The mess with the XD Guys was caused by the fact that they decided to market nondrop in products as drop in products. And while everyone states they were so cool to take them back or exchange them the fact of the matter is I was the one who agreed to do so on my dime, even though the incorrect marketing has not my mistake.

Tactical Technologies is a new online store started by a gentleman by the name of Brian Buller. Among other things he is carrying some of our parts. After being contacted by Mr Springer and told lies about our products, My Buller contacted Mr. Williams at Springfield and got the above explanation. He then contacted me and I offered my take on it. He then made his own decision about carrying them.

By the way, Powder River has NEVER contacted me directly or indirectly about this, or any other product we make. The only time we have spoken was when he first released his safety lever and I called him with some questions about the material he used, and if it was cast or machined.

Bob,

5 mistakes in your posting concerning me.

1. I have never spoke with anyone from the company you speak.

2. I was contacted by SA to see if I was making this product, I did not contact them about this.

3. Claiming I copied my designs is totally false. I doubt you even know what we are current doing with our products. I had XD trigger designs before you knew my name.

4. No one gave me money to do anything or has made any business decisions for me. I am very happy with the decisions I've made and our current designs and products.

5. Claiming I have no engineering experience is a new one for you, as I have worked as a product engineer for two companies and developed new products for both of them.

Do no continue to slander me.
