Pistol Cases

In reading in another thread about what bag to get that can store a few pistols (see "Too many XD's?"), someone stated that people shouldn't store pistols in most cases they come with. Is this true? If so, why? What cases are good to get in terms of individual gun, and mult-gun cases?

Also, can you use those cases inside a gun bag? Both single and multi gun cases?

*I didn't want to derail the other thread with these questions*

i have a cheap 2 gun bag from cheaperthandirt.com. It works, holds 2 guns and 6 extra mags and has a pocket in the front that can hold 2 boxes of 50 rounds... So i usually have 8 mags loaded (130 rounds) and then another 100 rounds in the front pocket...

I have a break down shotgun hard case that can be locked and that's where I keep my guns. I also use it to carry some of my guns to the range. I keep about 5-6 pistols in it and I carry a shoulder bag that has my glasses and ammo in it.

You shouldn't store your pistols in anything that will retain moisture, i.e. foam cases or leather holsters. I just keep mine around the house in various locations, such as on top of my bookshelf. If you must keep it locked up get a small safe that can be bolted to the floor or the wall and get a dehumidifier for it or use some silica gel.

Thumbs up Pistol cases

I have one that I got at my local walmart. It is metal, lockable and has the foam in it to keep the pistols from moving around. It will hold 2 pistols.

If the case your gun came in is FOAM lined then you do not want to use it for long term storage. The foam will aborb the oil from your gun and humidity from the air. Enough humidity will turn into moisture and rust your gun.

I see. The plastic cases that came with the guns (FN and Ruger) are plastic only. No foam lining. How about material lining of some sort like nylon?

I have had a rifle in a foam case for about five years, it sits on a shelf in my closet right next to the shower, my wife takes LONG showers to the point that it rains in my bathroom 100% humidity. I just pulled her out (the gun not my wife) to check and not a speck of rust.
