If your serious about self defense and not just shooting tight groups then take some classes or get some DVDs. Most don't know that their is a big big difference in shooting groups on a target and real life self defense. Check out these DVD Warrior Talk Forums - Powered by vBulletin Go to his gear store. Living in AZ i've shot with people that have trained with almost every well known school in the country. Gabe is number one in my book. His DVDs teach you how to survive a real life gunfight and how to win.

if youre serious about self defense shooting go somewhere they allow rapid fire and just unload several mags (hammer pairs, failures, etc) at different close ranges from different positions. AND SHOOT SOME DRILLS WITHOUT EARPLUGS

im not trying to detract from your post, I just know that ive seen well trained shooters damn near drop their rifle in a combat situation when they hear the first shot/burst with no hearing pro

I guess it would also help to Seek defensive training from someone whos been shot at, lol

You definitely need a cleaning kit, and I recommend a Hoppes cleaning kit which can be had for about $8 for the 9mm. It comes with a rod, brush, cotton patches, Hoppes #9 cleaning solvent, Hoppes lubricating oil. It gives you enough cotton patches for about 2-3 thorough cleanings and enough solvent for about 5-10 cleanings. I recommend cleaning the gun after every shooting session, and the amount of ammo you shoot and how dirty it is will determine how much you have to clean it when you get done. This will keep your gun clean and in working order for many many years.

To summarize everything so far, here's what a newbie needs or at least need to consider:

a). Ammo - duh
b). Eyes - protect those peepers
c). Ears - muffs and/or plugs
d). Snap Caps/Dummy Ammo - for dry firing/practice
e). Safes and/or locks
f). Holster - especially if you plan to carry
g). Range Bag
h). Extra magazines - if you prefer
i). Uplula speedloader - if your fingers need it
j). Cleaner Kit / Supplies / Tools
k). Night Sights - if you prefer
l). Trigger Kit - if you prefer

Here is one of the many, good for basics.

So, you want to be a crack pistol shot? To learn to become a crack pistol shot, one needs old-fashioned

The author suggests bullseye shooting can be boring. I enjoy it because I like to test myself on tight groups and distance. I'm now shooting my xd 4" as well as my SW K22 and that's pretty good.
