Lasers or not?
I'm getting ready to purchase an XD40 subcompact for CC. I've looked at both CrimsonTrace Laser Grips and at Laser max Recoil spring lasers. I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on whether to use lasers or not and if so which one to go with. Thanks!

Personally I don't think the XD needs anything and that lasers only limit your shooting abilities by training you to look for the dot and not proper muscle memory, but they are cool, just a point of failure that may decrease your reaction time and accuracy in a defensive scenario, if you play to carry it concealed. I like the green lasers best, for goofing around.

I think I'm going to go with the TLR-2 that has both a light and a laser and mounts to the rail. See link below:
Streamlight - Tactical Gun Mount Series - TLR-2 with Laser Sight I've seen it listed for as low as $200 but it looks like the current going rate is $220. Still, for a unit that has both light and laser I think it's a good deal. Brian |

i personally dont prefer them. think of it this way, in a close quarter battle situation, even though they may be split seconds, the time it takes to activate the push button and visually locate the laser on your target (which will probably be moving and/or shooting back) is time wasted. a good set of night sights and a weapon light such as a surefire or insight will always be better in my opionion. the intimidation factor is there by shining a laser in your adversaries eye, but the same works with a tac light. if you want one still id go with the combo light/laser that is offered. taking your time and aiming is more for an offensive situation not a personal defense situation...
my 2 cents |

I'm not sure why that makes much difference. If you have a more imediate threat that would make fumbling for the switch unwise then don't fumble for the switch! The fact that the light and or laser is there does not require you use it. There is no reason you can't have Trijicons AND a light/laser.

Immediate Threat: Shoot! dont turn your damn light on!
yes you can have both, think of back up iron sights on a m4. your m68 or eotech isnt goint to fail anytime soon but its that peace of mind. yes and you can still see the sights with the light on they aint THAT bright! |

I went with the Crimson Trace. There is no 'fumbling' for the switch. Also, it is a solid beam instead of pulsing, and you don't have to replace your factory guide rod with a plastic one. (or so I heard they were plastic)
Oh ya, and if you don't want to use it all the time, just don't turn it on. I never use mine when at the range, but I want it there when I need it. |

I'll post here what I've posted in other "Laser yes/no" threads. IMO you would be better served by putting that 3-400 dollars towards a GOOD rail mounted light, night sights, and ammo and lots of practice. Hell if you spend wisely you can add a defensive pistol class ontop of all that and be way ahead.
FYI-The two guys who come shoot our USPSA fun matches with lasers on their 92FSes usually rank as the last two when the scores come out. What happens? They spend A LOT of time looking for the dot on the target in broad daylight.
