IMO it is a good idea. Although some of it's uses are debatable. It is beeter to have it and not use it then the reverse.

I see where people say they give away your location, yeah in the movies they do. In real life the muzzle flash will do the same. I shoot bowling pins with them and beat guys that do not have them. Some people stare and waste time looking for the light, well to be honest they are not going to be a good shot with or without them with bad habits like that. Somebody mentioned they do something bad for muscle memory, well sorry but I call BS on that one also, shooting a bullseye with or without a laser will do no difference too muscle memory. I am not a great shot, but I can see the difference that the grips have made for me, they really helped with trigger control. I now have much better control over my shots. You would be surprised to see that the little light moves all over while watching TV, I had not paid any attention to that before. I may have been a little harsh in my last comment, but it just upsets me to see the people that have never used (no personal experience) piss all over something that may help somebody else. |

at some point i'd like to get a green laser for my XD45.. it's just that the majority of them are very bulky (yes the Lazerlyte is small, but has a very limited run time) and have pressure contact cords that get in the way.. the Viridians are huge, and very expensive.. CT doesn't have a green laser grip yet, and i'm not too thrilled by the CT XD grips as they are now.. they seem too bulky and obtrusive.. it would force you to change your grip with them on.. of course, i'm sure that you'd get used to it after getting them.. i just think they look out of place on the pistol.. unlike the 1911 CT grips..

I sighted in at 10yds in broad daylight. You can adjust the laser with the allen wrenches that come with the laser. You can see the red dot just fine in sunlight. One thing i noticed after getting the laser was that i was pulling the trigger too hard and was thowing the shot off.The laser really lets you see what your doing wrong when you pull the trigger.I bought my crimson trace laser off E-bay from a gun store in idaho for $158 for my G-19.The laser is really great at night. It takes 5 mins to install one of these.

I’ve heard that the Laser max Recoil spring lasers aren’t that great mainly because they can’t be adjusted. Otherwise, laser are good for practice every now and then to see if you are jerking the trigger.

Have you ever seen one of these in person? I would like to look at this Laser. Looks good, especially the price. I just wonder if it would still fit in a regular holster or if it would be too bulky.... I just looked at there site and it says they will be at the NRA show in KY next week. I am thinking about going to that to see all the exhibits and new toys to buy...

I've got a Viridian for my XD40 and Crimson Trace grips for my SW442. No experience with the LaserMax (guide rod replacement laser) or with Crimson Trace laser grips on an XD.
In general, I'd say the benefit of a laser for me is that when I'm at the range it gives me a strong, clear visual indication of tremor and/or if I'm flinching or pulling during trigger pull. I've never been, and hopefully never will be, in a defensive shooting situation. That being said, I like the Crimson Trace grips b/c the grip switch is right there on the grip and requires no thought to activate; not so for the Viridian or rail mounted lasers. I think LaserMax has a switch also. With either gun, if I shoot from a 2 handed isoceles stance, I'm more accurate with the sights. When I draw and shoot from the hip with the 442, which seems to me to be a likely defensive scenario, the laser is better for me. As others have mentioned, the Viridian is big. Don't know of any holster for the XD with a rail laser but they're probably out there. No problem with my Mika holster and lasergrips on my 442. I like the green laser over red speaking only in terms of ability to visualize. I've heard that the green laser has more power requirements than a red laser so it's difficult to make them smaller. My 442 is my self-defense gun and I'd go with Crimson Trace for any gun I'd use for self-defense. The Viridian is a great product and I've been happy with it but I wouldn't use it for self-defense purposes. Last edited by drgonzo : 05-05-2008 at 11:21 AM. |

Lasers
I have never used a laser. On my Sig DAK .40, I can accurately fire off 6 rounds in 6 seconds give or take a second, and hit a target nicely at 15 yards. I just recently purchased an XD 4" Bi-Tone .45 with a 13 round mag. It should be in this week. I have always wanted an XD, and the stimulus package came around, so I decided to get one. I did have a few questions about lasers, never having used or owned one. Will the Lasermax system work internally the same as it does for the Glock? I plan on putting Trigicons on the pistol, I was kind of disapointed Springfield didn't have them offered as an option from where I ordered from, but that is neither here nor there. After markets will work just fine.
My only interest in a laser is for precision shots when they absolutely positively must go through the "occular area" into the brainpan and put someone down hard and fast, not to mention the intimidation factor that may prevent me from having to do that in the first place. On the internal lasers, such as the Lasermax, it essentially replaces the guide rod, is that ultimately detrimental to working of the weapon? Will it cause an issue later, or is it smooth and reliable? I have always been tempted on a laser, and this pistol is going to be my new "baby" so I want to dress it up nice. Seriously, on this whole intimdiation factor thing... The armed confrontations I have been involved in happen fast, both people are moving, both people are cycling through their OODA loops as fast as they can. They guys that I have pointed guns at lock their eyes on me and the gun. I'm not sure how they would have noticed that their was a dot on their chest...You really think that you are going to get an assailant to take his eyes off of you and look down at their chest? Maybe if you are at 20 feet and he is standing still with a bat and you are negotiating trying to get him to comply. But in an actual fight, or in a situation where you are moving, and disengaging you are not going to get the bad guy to look down at his own chest... Maybe lazing his eyes, but good luck with that while you are moving. What is going to intimidate him is strong verbal commands, an aggressive, confident draw, and dynamic movement. "hey man, look down at the dot on your chest" is not going to come out of your mouth, he is likely not going to hear it...
Do some force on force training and get back to us on the intimidation factor of lasers.

All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting. |

Have had a Laser Max on my XD45C since last December and love it. Have put several thousand rounds through it and have not had any problems.
