Multiple holsters needed

First I must say what a wealth of information I have found on this site! Being a fairly new owner of a "out of the box" XD9 Service, I find the information and opinions here a great help.

I am currently looking for 2 holsters for the xd9. The first for daily use around the ranch while on the tractor, the 4 wheeler and on horse back. This holster I would prefer to be a OWB type and a positive hold is essential. I found the supplied Holster that came with the XD9 had the end of the barrel banging on the metal tractor seat while crossing drainage areas which proved a bit un-nerving. I had a tough enough time coming to grips with the new composite guns but am now sold on them but sure would like to carry the XD in leather. When worn in this manner a quick draw is secondary to a secure carry as it will be used more as a snake gun than anything else.

For the concealed carry there is more than enough data and opinons that I have yet to read while searching the site. If there are some new products that might not turn up on a search and folks are pleased with them I would love to get some feedback on this as well.

Thanks for your ideas and congratulations on a wonderful site,

Rancher D

Don Hume makes some nice leather holsters for the XD and the price is appealing. I have a Don Hume open top for my XD 40 service model and the firearm is very secure in the holster. I am sure there are many others as well but I haven't any experience with them.check out Pistol Gear they have them at an excellent price and when you order from them the item arrives in just a couple days. Great customer service as well.

Thank you Johnny.

I guess I am just too used to carrying a revolver with a thumb strap. I have looked at the Open Top model on the Net only and it is good to get feedback from an owner. Do you believe it would securely hold the XD while on horse back and the tractor?

I just bought one of these for my 1911's and LOVE it. Positive retention, very comfortable, and 10 feet tall and bullet proof!
Blackhawk CQC SERPA.

I also carry a full size 1911 IWB in this Tucker Cover Up...again, very comfortable, adjustable, and only one clip.

Let us know what you decide to get!

+1 on the Don Hume open top. For concealed carry i use a Crossbreed Supertuck.

For what you are talking about take a look at Gunner's Alley and the Don Hume holsters with the thumb strap Belt Holsters the 711, 721, and 722 all have thumb straps and the holster extends past the barrel providing some protection of the muzzle. Another suggestion being you are seated on the tractor is a crossdraw holster which provides easier access. My favorite but more expensive is a holster by Fist that works great when seat and then adjust to a crossdraw FIST, INC. . Though the crossdraw holster does not conceal as well it is a very comfortable position to draw from particularly when seated.

Hope this helps.

I'd recommend a G-Code OWB; Bladetech; or a JS Holsters brand OWB holster.

Galco makes a great holster, and still not priced to high.

Galco holsters; Holsters; Gun holster, pistol holsters, western holsters, shoulder holsters, leather holster and Glock holsters

This is a paddle holster which secures to your belt very well, and has a snap strap on top. It is very easy to use your thumb to unsnap while you draw. This may take care of the "positive hold" you are looking for. They also have one that goes on your belt if your not a fan of paddles. Their paddles work very well though, plus it easy to take off/on.

For my XD9sc, IWB I have a Crossbreed Quickclip that is very secure and comfortable - even for 16 plus hours. For OWB I have the Blackhawk CQC Serpa. The Serpa works for ccw on occasion, too. It is very secure, not expensive and will serve you well.

I've had great luck with Fist holsters ( fist-inc.com ). You can ask that any of their models be modified to suit your taste or needs, and a thumb break can be added to almost any of their designs. On top of that they offer a discount for multiple purchases. If you call their toll-free number and ask for Jim, you'll be talking to the guy that makes your holster.
