Question about after-market guide rod...
First of all, I just wanted to let everyone know that I will soon be adding TruGlo TFO's to my 40 Service thanks to everyone's posts on here! Thanks guys! I can't wait!
Now to my question...I have been contemplating adding an after-market guide rod but haven't seen a whole lot of info regarding the true benefits. I'm quite pleased with the performance of my 40 service as it is, but if I can actually make it better I'm all for it. Anyone have any experience with adding an after-market guide rod on a 40, or any other for that matter? Does it really reduce the kick-up that much? Look forward to anyone's shared experiences or advise. Thanks in advance!

I added Don's Guide Rods to both of mine and was amazed at how different it was. It's a big improvement. Just make sure you use the recommended weight springs and don't try to reinvent fire. He's got it figured out.

It doesn't reduce recoil it just makes it feel different (less snappy and more of a push) and only if you use a heavier than OEM spring. Sometimes using a heavier spring will cause failure to eject.

if you use a after market guide rod that accepts 1911 springs then you can match the springs to the load that you shoot.

I added the DGR with a 22# spring and have never looked back. I had just got XD40 back from Springer with a fresh triggerjob, triggerbar, Dawson Precision night sites and a polished feedramp. I installed the DGR, and as this is my daily carry pistola, I ran the XD through a 400 round "test session" to ensure everything was up to snuff and I was used to working with the new sites and trigger pull; everything ran flawlessly.
To this day, I've still had no FTF, FTE or any other hiccup of any type. I've seen threads that suggest ordering both the 20 and 22# springs and see which you like the best, but for me, it's the 22#'er.

Thanks for all the info. Like I said, I'm very satisfied with the performance of my XD without any mods and the risk of the occassional FTE along with that old saying "if it ain't broke"...I'm thinking this might be a good idea to experiment with at a later date when I have a backup. At the moment my 40 is the only option for my/spouse's defense so I think I'll wait. Very comforting to hear of USMC's success though.

Do they make one of these for the Sub-Compact models, where the reduced muzzle flip might actually make a difference?
