Need advice on a "carry" light.
I'm pretty new to this topic but I've researched it a little. I'd like to get something along the lines of what I've found. I'm not tied to it by any means and I would definitely like to know if there are cheaper options. I realize that lights w/ smaller reflectors will not project like a larger reflector (eventhough the lumen rating is the same). I know I will need to live with a smaller reflector if I plan on carrying it on a regular basis. Anyway... here is the Insight H2x Typhoon II ($159),
http://www.botachtactical.com/inh2xtyii.html What I like about it... 1) reasonable size (required for above reasons) 2) reasonable battery life (3 hours) (also required since it is an easy requirement) 3) momentary switch on back of light (also required) 4) 170 lumens output (I'm not sure what I need but since this is available I would make the requirement to be "well over 100" lumens.) I believe this is a new light so it might represent a lot of improvements that have come about due to improvements in technology. The big difference over this and the original H2x Typhoon I belive is the output and price (original is $139, 80 lumens). The H2x Typhoon also LOOKS like the BlackHawk Gladius but I'm not sure how similar they are. Finally, I would prefer the light not have the anti-roll square on the grip but I can mod the light to my liking no prob. There are original Typhoons w/ a round body so a similar version of the Typhoon II is probably in the works. Any advice? Thanks, X |

ARin,
Yes the Black Hawk Gladius = Insight H2x Typhoon. Obviously the two will have similar specs. I was asking about the Insight H2x Typhoon II that is rated at over twice the output. I looked for a BH equivalent and found nothing. In fact, info for the Typhoon II seems to only be available on botach.com. Even Insight's website doesn't have any info on it yet. Does anyone have any input on what the competition might be for thr TII? At $160 it seems like someone would try to offer a better value. thanks, X |

Check out what Fenix has to offer. I just purchased a couple of their models for duty carry.

I have a SureFire 6P LED that I really like. Its very bright (80 lumens) and has a long battery life (40 lumens after 3.5 hours taping to 1 lumen over the remaining 7.5 hours). Its nearly indestructable. Its small and has decent ergonomics. Other than the $85 price, what's not the love?

First of all consider staying away from BoTactical. http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Botach_Tactical
Second of all it's hard to beat a Surefire light. They are expensive but great.

I got a black Inova 5-led light from Target for pretty cheap, and it is an awesome light. I guess for a cop there might be good reason to pay that much for a light though.

Tiburon65:
I bought https://www.fenix-store.com/product_...roducts_id=226 and https://www.fenix-store.com/product_...roducts_id=333 So far, I'm absolutely thrilled with them. I wear them both on my duty belt, and keep the L2D set for the lower modes but longer run times (important when you track a group through the brush for an entire midnight shift) and the P2D set on the turbo mode for vehicle stops and the usual SHTF type stuff. |
