My Crossbreed Supertuck mods...
Having recently bought an XD-45 Compact, I was searching for a viable carry holster. My prefered IWB holster is the Sparks Versamax 2 but the wait times were too long for this pistol currently. For years, I had thought that a leather base with a Kydex "upper" would merge the comfort of leather with the advantages of Kydex in a slim IWB holster. I had never heard of the Crossbreed brand before joining this site. When I saw the CrossBreed Supertuck I knew I had to give it a shot. The turn around on my order was very quick considering that we were right in the midst of the holidays. After getting my holster I set about to do some real practice with my XD. Unfortunately, after my first couple of range sessions, I wasn't so happy. The high leather panel behind the pistol (especially in the area of the grip) slowed/kept me from getting a quick, accurate grip on the pistol. Also, it seems as if the Kydex was molded with an unloaded pistol so there was no tunnel for the loaded chamber indicator which was making reholstering a bit tricky to get it locked in. I considered sending it back to CB for some modifications but I have a block of training coming up in the next few days and really wanted to use my XD so.....out came the tools and here are the results.
![]() ![]() I kind of ruined the Kydex a bit by using too much heat while molding the LCI tunnel but it's still useable as is. I'd like to get a little more retention into it but that'll wait until after this training is over in a few weeks in case I totally ruin the holster. The big plus is that now I can quickly and consistently get a good grip on the pistol on the draw. Today on the timer, I was consistently back into the 1.8's from an "under a Polo shirt draw" with a hit on a 3x5 card at 10yds. Before the mods the best I could manage was 2.1 seconds and wore a hole in the top of my thumb as it rubbed on the leather shield. The other thing I would like to see is the Kydex extend down a bit further towards the muzzle to make it easier to get this holster in place with the shown clips. Overall I really like this holster and look forward to ordering another soon for my Glock to replace the Sparks holster I currently use with it. |

Have you check out the Minotaur Spartan or MTAC from Comp-Tac?
They use .090" kydex instead of Crossbreed's .063" kydex. They also mold the kydex with the appropriate channels for LCIs and require little to no adjustment. The Minotaur holsters also allows for tension adjustment with only the included allen wrench. No hairdryer required Look at them side by side and tell me what you think. ![]() The Spartan is selling for $60 and the Crossbreed Supertuck is $65. I have been carrying in Comp-Tac holsters for more than 5 years and I have gotten a lot of mileage out of them. |

Nah, I hadn't seen those before. I've only ever seriously carried 1911's and/or Glocks in IWB config and have just always used Sparks holsters. I really like the concept as shown in these holsters because they wind up being so thin unlike the all leather holsters. That holster pretty much has all the things I would want to change on the supertuck. Thanks for the heads up.
