30 Rd XD9 Magazine Mod

Well Just posting this because I am always tooling around with something and I stumbled across something that actually works!

Awhile ago, I purchased a Ruger 10/22 50 Rd straight magazine (it works flawlessly and I highly recommend it) from the MWG Company. I also bought a "National XD9 30 Rd" magazine, just for kicks.

Turns out that I did not do my research on this mag, as I should have. As soon as I opened the box I was disappointed. The mag was ugly! Painted steel, with a noticeable seam on the back where they formed it. But I figured no big deal if it worked. No such thing! Failure to feed reliably and not once would it lock open the slide.

Called up MWG, they sent another one, saying if it still would not work they would refund if I sent the mag's back. The second one was not any better. So, I threw them in the spare parts drawer as a lost cause.

Today, I pulled them out to see why they would not work. After fiddling about with dummy rounds, it seems the problem lies in the follower. Its tolerances are so loose, it slides to the opposite side of the slide lock lever. So just out of curiosity, I swapped the follower from a factory mag. It worked! Took it to the range and sure enough, flawless. I ended up swapping the floorplate also, as the MWG factory floorplate was hideous.

Now I have two 30 Rd magazine that work just like the factory mag's. Now, this is far from a practical solution to added more rounds to your XD-9. It's not cost-effective, and since its not legal for USPSA, absolutely pointless.

But, it's fun at the range! And if you happen to have any of the 30 Rd mags now you know that you can fix them if you want.

Not to mention all the extended mag sleeves you'd need to fill out the exposed area of the magazines.

Yeah, that would resemble a PR-24 side handle baton! But really, with the full-size grip it's not an issue for me.

JesseJames: I neglected to mention a very important part:

When swapping the followers, there is a slight variation in thickness of the follower. The MWG follower has a raised post on the underside for the spring, thus the spring will be to short with a XD follower. To remedy this, I needed to make a spacer that would take up the space difference between the two followers. Lacking anything that would fit better, I placed a 45 ACP dummy round between the old floor plate and the XD floorplate.

So (I really need to post pic's of the whole process, it's much simpler than it sounds) starting from the top: The new XD follower, spring, old MWG floorplate, .45acp dummy Rd, new XD floorplate, new XD plastic bottom cover. Be sure to put the spacer at the bottom of the mag.

It's not to important what the spacer is made of, I just used what I had laying around. In theory the XD follower could filled with epoxy, making a flat surface for the extended spring to press against. It's interesting that the XD spring is tapered, whereas the extended spring is not.

Hope this helps.

I agree completely. The term "Tacticool" comes to mind!

would you trust it to have around the house for home protection? I think it would be cool to have 30+1 instead of loaded mags stashed in various places. I have always wanted to pick one up just for fun though.

Yes, I would trust it. Just got back from the range (OK, it was yesterday) and it performed flawlessly again. And yes, they are fun.

Which brings up the thought.....Why cant the aftermarket manufactures make a magazine that actually works? I have already found that the problem lies in the follower. Since they are both plastic, all they would have to do is alter the mold to be closer to the factory piece, is that so complicated? Are you listening MWG, and Pro-Mag?

Oh well, just ranting.

I've also got the same 30rounder as you, and have noticed the follower is lacking plastic in certain areas. It doesn't hold open the slide on the last shot.
But I did change out the follower from one of my 16 round mags, and I also stretched out the spring about 2 inches as well. And the thing functions flawlessly yesterday at the range. I loaded 40 rounds into it each time (3) and had a freakin blast unloading them!
Thanks for the tip!!!
Now just to find some spare magazine parts for both the 16 and the 30 rounders... Any idea where?
