I made a tactical style holster..
I have only 3/4 of a huge steer or bull's worth of this cowhide, so I got to fooling around last night, made a pattern for the holster direct from my XD 40 service, till I got a snug fit.
Also working on a shoulder holster but without a leather one to use to duplicate from( or a pattern to start with), I am having a tough time with the harnessing. The tactical has velcro for the straps and the flap at the back of the gun. Next plans are a standard belt type( thats the easiest, take the same pattern and merely make a belt loop on the back) and an IWB. I also offered to make my buddy one for his 1911- he will tell me what style he wants. In addition I will make mag pouches for the XD. ![]() ![]() So now I can add this new craft to my fur hat making, brass casing jewelry, and taxidermy. I also got a fur mitten pattern, and have a vest pattern and did make a vest once for a guy out of African nyala antelope hides with the hair on. |

If it is a stiff chrome-tanned hide you can get some nice shaping if you wet it and do some forming as it dries. If you use alcohol to wet it it will dry faster but remove some of the oils.

I was thinking just that about the alcohol. I think this is vegetable tanned as they call it- oak bark tannins, then dyed. I am using artificial sinew to sew, then I burn down the knot ends so they don't unravel. Same stuff I use on my fur hats. Also note the deer hide I used to put behind the holster, I have bunches of deer hides too.

I bought a bunch of heavy snaps, more velcro, and some of those snap together buckle things like are on fanny packs. Couldn't work on anything with these today though, had 2 deer come in that needed caped and one cape weighed enough to make me rather sore- big necked buck.
