Typical enhancements and vendors for XD's

I've got an XD9 sc for carry, and an XD 45 Tac on order. I would really like to get input from ya'll on two questions.

1. If you only had say $300 to $350 to spend for improvements on an XD, what would you spend it on? Is there some specific package or group of customizations you'd have done that is "maximum value"?

2. Among the vendors that specialize in XD work, who does some of the very best work for the money, in your opinion? Any I should avoid? Here are a few I've looked at, after reading this site and browsing around a bit.

* Springfield's own custom shop

* Canyon Creek

* Springer Precision

* Robar (esp. interested in their NP3 and Roguard finishes)

* Others?

I would do triggers and sights for that kind of money. I've had Springer Precision and Canyon Creek do XDs for me, and both are fantastic.

+1 on sights & trigger parts as both could easily be improved on relatively small budget.

IMHO though, nothin' really improves or gives (in your words) "maximum value" like actually putting that piece to use in a range/controlled environment also improving or honing your skills ... so I vote for ammo & range time!

Is it worth looking at a match barrel upgrade at some point, and if so, what barrel brands are worth looking at?

You may want to try looking over the forum sponsor's deals... Pistol Gear offers match-grade barrels in both semi-drop-in and gunsmith-ready variants. Other popular options in match-grades include reputable commercial barrel makers like Bar-Sto, Jarvis, EFK Fire Dragon, so give those a look if you're interested. Hope this helps!

What about using Springfield itself for customization? I wonder if having a trigger or other internals done by other smiths might void the warranty, whereas if Springfield does it, perhaps the will maintain the warranty. Has anyone checked out that issue?

I'd have to agree here,
A good trigger and some TFO's would be my first mod.

Well, after some polishing, of course...

Sights and guide rod. The gun doesn't need anything else.

Spend the rest of your money on extra mags and ammo.

according to the 2005 IDPA rule book, i can get a trigger job, ported match barrel
and non-tungsten guide rod and still compete in STOCK and ENHANCED Division

but all this is next year, i still need a few thousand rounds of practice to get my grip and recoil right
