Just got in my CC holster...
I just got in my new MTAC holster from Comp-Tac! I researched and decided to purchase off of reviews and input I read from this website and the glocktalk website.
This is my first holster and since I work from home, I am trying to wear it all day, every day to break it in until my CCW license arrives. It definitely takes some getting used to. Now I see why people say that you should have more than 1 concealment holster. I'll probably buy a different one for cold weather when I can wear a large coat to cover it. The MTAC just fit my lifestyle since I do wear my shirt tucked in 80% of the time. It does a great job of concealing the firearm whether the shirt is tucked in or not. You'll only get a print of the weapon if I raise my hands over my head or bend over to pick something up off the ground. And even then, you have to know what you are looking at to tell that it is a pistol. The pistol is a bit of a pain for me to insert into the holster, but it comes out very cleanly and is very secure while in the holster. I'm glad to see that the weapon doesn't have to be snatched to get it out of the holster I'm 6'-4 and about 195 lbs, so I don't have a lot of "padding" to hide a weapon. I'm still looking into getting a 4" 1911 Kimber to carry since it is a little bit "thinner". I can't get rid of my XD because it was my 1st pistol that was all mine (I shared several with my father growing up) and because it is one shooting son of a gun! Never any failures. I'm looking into taking some beginner then tactical pistol classes here locally starting next year. They are rather pricey...to me at least, but look to be a very good investment. I definitely want to be as trained as I can possibly be considering that I am carrying such a weapon on my side. I have high praise for the Comp-Tac people. I ordered my holster via internet (which has to be "custom made" by the way) late Thursday night. The holster arrived via US mail the following Saturday. Total time = only 6 business days (9 calendar days). The finish of the holster is awesome and Comp-Tac even sent a hand written thank you and two pieces of candy. The candy seemed strange to my wife, but I thought it was a good indicator of a company and how much they appreciate their customers. By the way, here are a few pics of the holster (slide type body) and of my XD40 service. Thanks for you guys educating me (and countless others) on the nuances of the XD and the great gear available for it. ![]() ![]()

I just ordered the same holster for the same gun. Can't wait to get mine!!
Keep this thread updated on how well you like it. What you don't like about it, etc. And I purchased it for about the same reason. I have to wear my shirt tucked in all day at work, so I need a good concealment there. and being I am 6'3" 200lbs, I am sure we wear it in the same way. Thank you for your post and put up some pictures of you wearing it with a shirt if you get time.

Sounds like you and I are about the same size, so your results should be similar to mine. I'm 6'-4 and 195 lbs and I wear a 34 pants, so I'm not a particularly large guy (as far as my body-build goes). I just got back and had my wife take some pics of how the holster wears. It was uncomfortable for me until I moved it to the 4 or 4:30 position. It is actually rather comfortable here. Tomorrow I am going to adjust the cant of the gun to angle the grip forward. I always wear an undershirt, so the holster never really touches my skin, so I won't be able to comment on if the holster is uncomfortable against bare skin. The only obvious indication that something isn't normal are the two rather conspicuous clips on my belt. This would be much less obvious with a black belt, but I took the photos with a brown belt for contrast....and a worst-case scenario. As you can see, the hoster keeps the gun tucked in tight to the body. These jeans are a bit too tight for this holster, and I probably need a better belt, but you can see that the holster is doing its job well. I'd gess that this holster/gun combo requires me to wear a large 35 or small 36 waist pants to look totally perfect. I'll definitely carry all of this with me to buy two or three pairs of jeans I'll wear specifically for when I carry. This holster is great with my khaki pants since they tend to fit looser than my jeans in the hips and rear end. Pants being looser than standard in the hip/butt area hide the Kydex and muzzle print of the hoster much better than these jeans. It all just takes some getting used to. Side profile without over shirt. ![]() Front view without overshirt. (You can see these jeans are bit too tight, but you get the idea.) ![]() Side view with Polo style shirt tucked in over holster. ![]() Front view with Polo style shirt tucked in over holster. ![]() Side view with right arm extended over my head with polo style shirt tucked in over holster. ![]() By the way, in case the last 3 captions were misleading, the weapon is in the holster. You'd get a decent print of the grip if I bent over, but I figured I'd spare you a photo of my butt. Hope this gives you a better idea of what you ordered. JED

jethro3898,
Order the "J" clips or the "C" clips from CompTac they actually retain better and very little of the clip is exposed. I prefer the "J" clip because they will work on more than one width belt.

Jethro,
Thank you so much for posting those pictures and extra information. I planned on wearing the holster in about the same spot on my body, so this gives me a good indication of what it will look like. I purchased my holster with the J clips, so they should not as noticeable. But I don't know if I can wear a black belt or not (since I wear brown shoes...wife's rule). But I hope they don't show too much. Not sure how I would explain the clips if someone asked. But definitely looks like it conceals very well. My only other worry is how it will feel riding in the car. I drive an hour to work every day, so I am hoping that it is not too uncomfortable. When I get my holster, I will definitely take some pics and post them up in a new thread. Thanks again!

Let me ask you about your experience with the "J" clips. Comp-Tac's own website says that they do not recommend the "J" clips since the waistband of most pants are too flimsy to support the weight of the holster and firearm. What do you think?? I would tend to agree with Comp-Tac's assessment, even though I've never used them. This weapon/holster combo is very heavy. The "C" clips look like a much more stealthy option and will carry the load of the weapon and holster to the belt. I'd love to hear from someone who has a similar set-up with the "C" clips. I'm game for a pair if they work well. I know they are only $18, but I'll save myself that money if they aren't that good. Thanks for the input, guys.

I prefer the standard clips
Talking about the clips, I have the C clips and the standard clips on my CTAC holsters. I tried both at home and my wife noticed the C clips because they stuck out a little and looked odd. My plan was to use one standard clip and one C clip on both holsters to make the clips less visible. I then changed my primary holster over to 2 standard clips and my wife commented that they did not catch your attention like the C clips did.
The main problem I had with the C clips is the belt I wear is not thick enough to completely fill the C clip so it sticks out about 1/8th of an inch. This little gap just draws your attention to the clip because it looks different. I do use a black belt most of the time so that helps the standard clip to blend in a little. When I wear my shirt tucked in (the only time the clips would be visible) I put my cell phone right in front of the front clip to hide it a little. I also do not tuck my shirt in real tight, to help avoid printing, which hides the back clip a little as well. So far, in the 4 months I've been wearing the CTAC everyday, I have not had anyone ask what the clips are. I wear it all day at work with my shirt tucked in and I was sure someone would notice and ask but hasn't happened. If it did, I was ready to claim it was a "medical device" and leave it at that. |
