Exclamation #&*$&^*^&#@(*# Mag Release!

Well, I just went to swap a Canyon Creek extended mag release into my new XD-9 Tactical... I've done this twice before on two other guns without issue, but this time I tapped the pin one time too many! The whole freaking thing (spring, etc) came out! That little spring is a pain in the ass to get back in there, too.

Maybe if I can't fat-finger it back in I'll just wait and let the 'smith do it when I send the gun out tomorrow for trigger work, etc.

It took me more than an hour to put it back just to learn that the spring was facing the other way around. Another 30 minutes to put it the right way. I used a paper clip and a super-pointed needle-nosed pliers. I should've taken a picture to show you how...

Yea that spring is a bear to put back in. It took me about an hour and a half to put it back in.

After 20 minutes of swearing and 15 more minutes explaining to the wife just why I was swearing... I spent about 20 minutes getting it all back together.

That was a close one!

In his XD video, Lenny Magill uses a small screwdriver to spear the middle of the spring. Then he hold it in place with the screwdriver.

The easiest thing to do is to make a slave pin that is the same width as the catch. Put the spring in place, line of the holes of the catch with the frame and drive out the slave pin with the actual pin.

+1

Needle nose pliers also make a heck of a lot more sense to me than the "Spear" methods but a slave pin is easy to make and easier to install if you mess it up the first time. A thick paper clip or allen wrenches make good stock for the slave pin.

Be happy that I got it. I almost just boxed it up to let you do it on Monday

I took the button all the way out and held one side of the clip in with a brass punch. Then I just slid the spring down in place (had to wiggle and push it pretty hard) and ran the pin through the other side of the frame. All good!

Luckily I had another two XDs handy to look at for reference.
