I put Decal grips on my XD's. went with rubber on my XD9 sub (that I normally carry) and the sandpaper on the XD .45 service (nightstand gun w/ TLR-1 installed).

i like them both...but that sandpaper texture is almost too gritty for my delicate desk-jocky hands

hogue and pachmayr are the two main slip on types. decal grips are, as far as i can tell, held on with adhesive and come in either sandpaper or rubber,

i personally have the pachmayr ones and love them. the finger ridges index my fingers where they should be around the grip immedietly for a quicker draw.

pm kraigster, he has some good tips about the slip on ones.. you may even want to try his home-cooked method of using a bicycle innertube, basicly works the same minus the finger ridges.

I started out with AGrip and went to TruGrip. I like the super grippy grip tape.

though i went local i put a review up on PG for em.

got a 4inch service, bought the large hogue slip on. trimmed very little off the bottom, slide it on, and then cut around the dove tail safety.
great addition to the gun imo.

i opted out of pachmyrs, they looked to thick, and felt too hard.. personal preference, it also appeared to add some bulk to the grip.
when the hogues die on me, i'm gonna try The Kraigster.. that is.. bicycle inner tube

cheers

first i flattened it out and pressed it against the grip to see where it would hang down once in place. i trimmed a sliver off the base of the hogue (literally not alot) while holding it flat.

i then slid the grip on where i wanted it, using some really small precise scissors i just trimmed around the rear safety, the tip of the scissors insered into the groove of the safety and followed around.

make sure you get the grip placed where you want it before cutting, so you dont have to move it around and risk tearing it.
heres a pic of the rear grip of mine. imageshack is a bit slow right now.

cheers
