Background: As a lefty shooter, I can't get a good slide release on my XDs using my index finger, like I can on my Glocks and 1911s.
I received the following response back from SA Custom shop: "...not currently offering nor any plans in the future to offer a modified slide release..." I mentioned this problem to Scott @ Springer Precision when I shipped him my SC for a trigger job last week and he said he'd think on it and see if he could find a solution...HE DID! : ![]() ![]() I officially deem this to be forever referred to as the "Springer Lefty Mod"! The simple beauty of this mod is that it works better than stock both left handed and right handed, both for slide release and for slide lock and it is not an "extension", but a "reduction"; which should keep it legal for all IDPA/Production classes of competition, as well as keeping it's low, snag free profile for carry. He has milled off the upper portions of the finger grooves of the slide release, leaving only the bottom 1.5 grooves remaining, which provides a "contact shelf" for an index finger (or thumb). He has also done some additional precision shaping work. The result: An index finger slide release can be quickly accomplished by contacting not only the new low shelf, but also all four corners of the tab (stock, only the upper front corner of the tab could be used for an index finger slide release). The low position of the shelf allows me to drop the slide without much if any movement of the gun out of my primary grip, making it faster, more secure and surer then looking for the upper forward corner of the stock tab and having to roll the gun forward in my hand to hit that corner. Only downside: Girlie-men might not like the slight subcutaneous pain caused by the sharpish edges required to get the sure release. I did 20 index finger slide releases in about 20 minutes. I felt a slight subcutaneous pain each time, but no surface lacerations or scratches of any kind. I did not notice any reduction of trigger finger index sensitivity changes after any of the slide releases. Twenty minutes after this, the upper tip of the pad on my index finger was slightly sore, but nothing that didn’t disappear in an hour. Since most people won’t be shooting to slide lock more than a couple of times either in competition or on the street, I think this is really a non-issue, but I thought it would be worth a mention. Scott also cold blued the tab after the mod, which should be at least as durable as the SA factory pre-melonite finish This is a great solution for Left handed shooters who know that saving a fraction of a second, either on the street or in competition, can be the deciding factor in the outcome of the shoot. It works well for Right handers as well; providing a much more sure low thumb shelf vs. the stock tab. Since this is a first try for Scott, I'll refrain from sharing what he charged me for the work and let him finalize his pricing on this mod. Let's just say that you'd be crazy not to have it done if he already has your pistol for some of his other fine gunsmithing services. Thanks Scott!

I don't think that would be legal for USPSA Production class since it is an "external modification," but anyone who complains about it at the local level is a weenie, so you'll probably be fine.

These may sound stupid and I SHOULD know the answer to this but can the XD be in Production. As it is a "Single Action Pistol".

It's a safe action / striker-fired so it can play in USPSA Production. IDPA considers it single action so it is in Enhanced Service Pistol instead of Stock Service Pistol where all the Glocks are. It doesn't really matter, you will have fun either way.

Since we are forced to shoot IDPA in the ESP class, you might as well add the mag-well, becuase you'll need that speed in reloads to make up the extra 10 seconds for rankings over shooting a Glock in SSP! (wait a minute...that means IDPA considers a Glock a much slower gun than a XD...hehe!)
