I dunno itschris, indoors my TLR-1 throws a pretty good sized orb of ambient light. I agree though that it is less than with a traditional incandescent xenon/halogen/tungsten/fancy other word bulb.

Very nice. I was looking at them today while picking up a holster. What holster do you sue with your Tac?

I've got an idea of what my Birthday present is going to be...

I agree, the TLR-1 has pretty large orb, but LED's seem to light up things completely different. Where a bulb tends to shed light throughout a given space, the LED is much more directed and doesn't have the gradual disapation that a bulb has.

I love my LED. I think it's a positive being that I'm looking to light up an object not a room.... otherwise.. I'd just dangle a lantern from my tac rail.

I wish I wasn't colorblind because it causes difficulty seeing the red dot for me. I'm hoping green lasers become an option soon.

Daaa, nevermind, I was thinking and the MX with the little LED light below the main unit, wondered what that was for. Figured it out.

Pros - they're extremely bright, eat less batteries, and are not nearly as delicate as bulbs.

Cons - while they are very bright where you shine them... they are bright ONLY where the beam hits. As with most LEDs, the overall illumination is totally different in that there is really very little surrounding area lit up. A halogen for instance lights up the spot you shine, then light up the surrounding area as well. You just don't get that ambient affect with an LED.

I think that is a more important decision to make than which brand you get since they're all pretty damn good.
that all depends on the type of projector/lens the light has. My TLR-1 and other LED flashlights use a normal flashlight type reflector, and they cast just as much side light as a normal flashlight does. If you have an LED light that has the glass magnifying bubble type lens.. you will get light ONLY where the light is shined.. very narrow beam. But the newer style of lights that use the reflector shine just as good as a normal halogen.

LED's by nature are shockproof, don't really burn out, and they don't use batteries as fast. LED's will have a whiter/bluish color to them vs the yellowisn that a halogen will have. They also don't run near as hot as a halogen. My TLR-1 will go about 2 hours before it starts to dim a bit. My halogen lights that use the same batteries, are done within an hour of use. But those same batteries will still power my tlr-1 with enough light to be useful for a while.

I personally would rather have an LED flashlight.. and that's what I have switched to. Unless you are looking for a longer range search flashlight, I'd get LED. Halogen's tend to have a little further reach compared to an equal Lumen light in LED. But, I have illuminated things at 40-50 yards with my TLR-1 pretty well. I've stood in the beam of it at 70 yards, and it honestly hurt my eyes.

surefire x200a would be the narrow beam. For the purposes of being on a pistol for home protection, or simple street protection.. I don't see the need for a narrow beam. You are going to be mostly indoors, and close up. You want the beam to be wider to illuminate to the side more. The ONLY reason to have the narrow beam taclight in my opinion, is on an assault rifle being used for longer range threats.

Keep in mind that there is ambient light affecting the exposure on my camera, so the brightness of the light is slightly more than shown in the pic.. not a ton more.. but a little more. But the first picture was taken from my 3rd floor apartment. the trash can was probably 40 yards away. in person, you could easily spot an object you were shining at. The 2nd light is a picture of how the light looks when indoors.
