I use the Zems most of the time now. I still keep a set of regular silencio's or my old remington's in the range bag when I go in case I get someone shooting something high pressure in the lane next to me, but for general range use and competition shooting I like em. They aren't the best NRR rating available and if that's what you want, you will need to look seriously at doubling up earplugs w/ muffs.

I double up on foamies and a good earmuff. Hearing is very important to me. It doesnt take much to double up. I use the Leightning 31s for the earmuffs. They have pretty good reviews and have a high NRR. I use some Leight single use foamies(coincidently also have a high NRR). I bought a big bucket of foamies and the earmuffs at Cabela's but I'm sure they could be found in other places.

I use a set of Pro Ears Pro-Mag Plus muffs. They are rated at NRR-33, one of the highest in electronic muffs.

I like the Pro-Ears because they don't cut the loud sounds off, they lower the volume to under 70db. They also have a very fast 2 millisecond response time. You can still hear someone talking to you at the same time shots are being fired. A lot of other electronic muffs cut the sound off completely and you can not hear someone talking at the same time shots are being fired. Its very annoying to me having the sound clipped off like that.

When taking classes and I really need electronic muffs. I have a very hard time hearing the instructor with passive muffs even when he is right next to me with shots going off. With electronic muffs I can hear him even if he is at the far end of the firing line with 8-10 other students between us.

The worst thing about the Pro Ears is the price, they are very expensive. I paid $230 for my set. They are worth it to me and they are very comfortable too. I have no problems wearing them for 9 hour class days for two or three days in a row.

I use the disposable 29db earplugs (brand is QuietPlease!), for shooting small caliber outdoor.

Even when standing next to a guy shooting an 85 caliber.. Yes... 85 caliber, custom big-bore rifle. Something like 15$ per cartridge in a 10,000$ rifle; with only the QuietPlease! earplugs in, it was not loud enough for me to worry about. These things are great.

Now, if I'm shooting larger caliber, indoor, I wear a set of cheap noname earmuffs with the quietplease! earplugs. A shot from a .45 sounds like a tap on wood.

The muffs cost me about 10$ at a range I went to, and the earplugs are 3 dollars for a box of 10pairs.
