Installing mepros on a XD9...

My XD9 two tone isn't here yet, but I was planning on putting some mepro nightsights on it.

It is easy? Any special tools needed?

I can't wait... I haven't been this excited over a gun in a long time.

Oooh... I have the same gun. You'll like it.

I've been wanting to put better sights on mine as well. I just can't justify the expense at this time... and I'm really not thrilled about having to send my slide off in the mail.

I'm not sure I understand. It appears that the sights can be drifted off with some sort of punch or pressing tool. Looks like they 'slide' in and out. I haven't inspected the underside to see if a screw helps keep them in place.

I'm fairly ignorant about XDs. All I know is I shot one and I shot better on that day with it, than any of my other pistols I had.

I'm no gunsmith, so I can't give you a good answer, but I know a couple people have said that replacing the sights on the XD is difficult. If memory serves, it has something to do with how tight they are (?) Someone had their slide finish messed up a little because the person who replaced his sights put too much pressure on the wrong places. I don't know... but it sounds like it's a little trickier to do on the XD than most guns for some reason.

Maybe one of the sponsors can clarify this for us.

Let me be the first to say....do yourself a favor. Purchase them from XD-HS2000.com and have Ajames install them. The install is free, he will do a good job and you will recieve an undamaged slide with sights in the proper place.

Too many people have attempted this on their own and damaged their XD's....trust me.

DJDan, interesting. I hate sending stuff off and prefer to do it myself... Perhaps I should reconsider... Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into that.

search the forums here, getting the stock sights out is often an ordeal...many just cut the front sight out, and do their best to drift out the rear with a brass or steel punch without damaging the slide finish.
then you need an $80 sight pusher to drift in the new ones...vs. free from one of our vendors like AJames. and that sight pusher will only work on Sigs and XD's, so its a little pricey for a 'one time use'.

some things are worth doing yourself. others....not so much.

You have a good point. I was looking at my dealer cost for mepros and figuring I could buy a tool (figuring it'd be 20 bucks or so) and break even on it plus have the tool to change later down the road...

Also with my wife having an XD9 shes thinking about making her carry gun, Id need to change out that one as well...

I prefer to do all the work on my weapons myself. Also, if something needs to be done down teh road, I can do it myself w/o having to send it off again.

I checked out the pics for the factory sig pusher and others like maryland gun works...

Seems my 8 dollar AK/SKS adjuster could be easily and minimally modified to do the same thing. All these 80-150 dollar pushers do is push (drift) the sights.. it doesn't appear they do anything else.

I'm taking the wifes XD out of teh safe tonight and giving it a good look over. I'm not attempting jack on hers, if I screw it up I'd never hear the end of it

When I bought my 40 SC about 18 months ago I had TFOs installed before I left the shop. They took a punch and hammer to take the old out and put the TFOs in. Well about 3 months ago the fiberoptic/tritium insert came out of my front sight. rather than sending it off. A little LOC TITE. Its held perfect. I am picking up my service 9mm this week and will bite the bullet and send it to somone to have the TFO 's installed.
