I have a DGR in both my XD9 and XD40 Service. I tried the 22 and 20 lb springs in my XD40. I didn't care for them. I did notice that the weld on my oem spring for the XD40 was showing wear. This was at about 1,000 rounds. I use the DGR with a stock rated 18 lb spring in the 40. I never noticed a decrease in accuracy. I think the XD40 can be difficult to shoot well. I have a 16 lb spring with a DGR in the XD9. If I barely pull the slide back with the firing pin cocked already it will not fall back into battery. It does fire fine. I will go back to an 18 lb spring in the XD9 Service.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that is using (or has used) the Woff guide rod and recoil spring combo for the XD40 Service model. The factory standard Wolff spring is 17# and the extra power are 19# and 21#. What seems to work best with standard factory loads?

I have an XD9 service model. I also have the DGR with the 18 lb and 22 lb spring. The 22lb spring fails to put the gun into battery and is mushy. The 18 lb spring is longer and puts the gun into battery with authority. I feel that the 22 lb spring is too short. If it was longer it would put the gun in battery better but might also induce coil bind.

Bubba, you have validated my experinece with the DGR and 22# spring in the XD40 Service to a "T." I was beginning to think it was just me. You don't think that lighter but longer 18# spring causes too much pounding on the slide? Thanks.

I just put the 18, 20 and 22 lb springs the XD40 Service. All held the gun in battery. The 20lb spring is a tiny bit shorter than the 18 and the 22 lb spring is less than 1/8" shorter. Having also tried a 16lb spring in the Service model I think that an 18lb spring is the best (at least for me).

I think that 18lb is the stock rating so I don't think it would cause any additional wear.

Just curious why you liked the 18# over the 20#.

No experience with the 20lb. Only purchased the 18lb and 22lb.

Seems like if the 20# worked, it would be the best compromise. I am going to give it a try. Thanks.

This was posted by Klondike some months back in the DGR room and it is exactly what I experienced. And I have the same questions. Too quote:

"Well, I was at the range earlier this evening testing out my DGR with 22# spring for the first time on my XD40 Service which has about 300 rounds through it with no other modifications.

With my very first magazine, using WWB 180 gr., I got a fail-to-fire on my 6th round. I cycled the slide, ejecting that round and noticed no sign of a strike on the primer. I fired the 7th round, then got another fail-to-fire on the 8th round. I noticed that my "cocked" indicator pin was not showing through the rear or the slide. I then noticed that the slide would not go into battery.

Being pressed for time trying to complete the "Sharpshooter" stage in my NRA Handgun Qualification, I removed the DGR and spring assembly and reinstalled the factory guide rod and spring. I fired the two rounds that failed to fire as well as the next 100 rounds without incident.

I installed the spring correctly (open end on muzzle end) and I used the black delrin washer. What else could I have done wrong? Is it because the spring is new and needs a break-in period? Maybe I should try a lower rated spring?

Please advise. I'd really like to keep the DGR installed since it's just so damn pretty, but I can't go fumbling around with my pistol while I'm under the clock."

Unfortunately no one responded.
