TFO and CCW
Howdy all-
The snow will be here soon in Ellensburg, so I've come to the conclusion that I need to spend some money on my XD! I've been researching the possibility of adding new sights to my XD, probably TFO's. I use my XD service for the occasional CCW, so I was curious as to how the TFO's perform while drawing. Snags? When I get around to it, I'll probably send my slide off to Canyon Creek to get it refinished matte black and have them install the TFO's. I'm thinking a yellow rear and green front setup. Comments? |

Great question; One of the first things I did notice when I replaced the OEM sights with Truglo's TFO's sights on my XD45ACP service model, was that the front sight snagged all the time with "uncle mikes" type holster. Going to a Leather and/or Kydex cure this issue.
(IWB)I use andrew leather and a good friend had a blade tech.

I'll be using a Tucker Answer IWB holster. (Which, BTW, is awesome.)

No snagging problems with IWB Hume 715, OWB Hume 711, IWB Kramer #3, OWB Kramer Belt Scabbard holsters.
The OWB Hume 711 I have used in 3 classes, one 6 hour and two 18 hour classes. The OWB Kramer I have used in one 18 hour class and have another 6 hour class to take in Nov.

Many people love TFOs... most of them shoot in competition a lot, and carry concealed very little.
Three shooters at our range had their TFOs removed from their pistols and went to traditional 3-dot Trijicon night sights after they lost fiber-optic rods, typically on the front sight. The Trijicons have proven more rugged for these particular shooters who carry every day. I'm not saying this choice is for you... but I am saying that when I put night sights on my own carry guns (XD40SC, XD45 Service & XD45 Tactical) they won't be TFOs, but Trijicons. An added note - Trij sights typically don't care what holster you have.

I'll agree that TruGlo should have better quality control on the TFO sights. But I think its a very small percentage of TFO sights that have any problems at all. TFOs are the only sight that is a combo fiber optic and tritium. They are the only ones that will give a bright "glowing" sight in both darkness and daylight. I know that not everyone likes fiber optic sights for day time shooting but I really do. The bright glowing dots help me pick up the sights faster. And since my XD is my current every day carry gun I need night sights because thats what I've been training with. Until another company makes a combo fiber optic/tritium sight then I'll stay with the TFOs.

It's all about personal choice.
