Does anyone have any info/feedback on the Surefire sonic defender ep3: http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/.../prrfnbr/24306

I prefer in the ear type plugs over the muff type, I find the muffs hit the stock and distract me (granted only slightly) when firing rifles. Nothing like trying to line up your shot and you get this dull thump upside your head.

Just my preference though....

As far as I can see they likely wouldn't do all that good, considering a human breathing from a distance of 10 feet would generate 10 decibels.

So I guess I have answered my own question, none the less if you have a pair I would still be interested in your opinion on how well they perform.

The noise reduction rating is for ambient noise or continuous noise. They are designed to block impulse noise, like gunfire with only minimal impact on your overall hearing, allowing you to hear conversation almost normally.
Peltor makes a set as well, with a more traditional layout.

I've got some Silencio electronic earmuffs that I really like, but the things are rather uncomfortable when it's hot and humid. For those kind of days, you can't beat the Zems that OS sells.

I bought my Dad a pair of those Walker Quad muffs for deer hunting. He was about to give up hunting due to his poor hearing. I credit those muffs for giving him and I alot more time in the timber together. That's worth a hell of alot more to me than what I paid for them. Worth every penny.

Arggh decisions, decisions.

Between accessories & safety equipment I spend way too much time online researching stuff. Where's a gun-show when you need one.

Of course living in CA good ones are few & far between. Seems most distributors hold out on the CA shows and go for the NV or AZ ones.

For electronic ears I use Pro Ears Pro-Mag Plus muffs. They are rated NRR-33. They are very expensive but I like the high NRR rating and the way they attenuate the loud sounds instead of clipping them off.

I really like using them in shooting classes. Then its very important to hear what the instructors are saying. Because of previous hearing damage I have a very hard time hearing people talking when wearing hearing protection. Even when not wearing any hearing protection I have a hard time hearing people talk when there is any background noise.

I have a set of Leightning 31 passive muffs too. They are great when I don't need to hear anyone speaking.

+1 for using both foam plugs and muffs.I use peltor 105 muffs and foam plugs. Next week I will be fitted with a pair of over priced hearing aids from not protecting my hearing. When I was young I didn't know better, now I'm just trying to save what I have left.

Just an update, I stated in my last reply that I was going to be fitted with some over-priced hearing aids because I didn't protect mine well enough. Well they cost me $5200. Maybe this will be an incentive for all members to take care of their hearing.

Before you rush out and purchase electronics, give the ZEMS a try. We have dozens of customers that have scrapped their electronic muffs for the simplicity of the ZEMS.
