(seems the ears work better).i will use the ears from now on.. they are just wally world ones, but work good from my experience...ill try the doubling up too.

BTW... I ordered mine from www.pistol-gear.com
I have used these and the Peltor 6 Tactical Electronic..... and thous far I am not impressed. The peltors worked for muffing the sound of the guns but I had to turn the volume up all of the way to hear the guy right next to me, so I returned them with the hope of the radians being better.... it seems as if the right ear works to well and the left almost none at all as far as the microphones go and I still pick up some sharp sounds with these, now I am thinking of returning these....... any other ideas for the electronic muffs??? and as for double up, that is too true I am a navy submariner and when out at sea it is a requirement to double up your protection ( I learned the hard way with some hearing loss and a ringing for 3 days next to a few electric motors ) the point being no ammount of money in this world is going to bring back your hearing so dont be cheap on the protection.

Just in case you need yet another recommedation, I am very fond of my Silencio Falcons (http://www.silencio.com/htfiles/electronics.html). Got 'em on sale for about $55, and they work great. The only feature I wish they had is an auto shut off after a period of inactivity. If I forget to turn them off, they eat batteries ( 2x AAA) madly.

Try shooting the thing! . Just kiddin' ya, I usually warn the person the next table over if there is anyone. If they're at the opposite end of the range I don't though. The other day there were some poor bastards at the 100 yard range shooting a .22LR and I happened to be shooting my mosin nagant 91/30. They did not have ear plugs in and were about 18 maybe if that. And now they're all deaf.

I've only ever worn ear plugs and I find that the ear plugs I use provide better protection than most muffs that I've tried.
I've stood next to people shooting large calibers, including shotguns and NEVER have my ears been ringing after a day on the range. I use the soft, silicone plugs with three flanges. They do a bang-up job and are relatively cheap.
You have to insert them correctly though and that counts for all types of ear plugs. That's really the most important thing. If they're not inserted correctly, they won't work worth a damn.

Just to play devil's advocate, I'll throw in my $0.02. I use whatever happens to be around...which means any of the four pairs of earmuffs I've bought from Home Depot over the years to protect my hearing when I'm working on engines, using a router or a table saw, etc. But that said, I shoot exclusively outdoors, and the range is my own (so I don't have some superhero with a hand cannon beside my ear), and my XD is just a 9mm. Otherwise I'm just shootin rifles (.22 or .30-30). So far so good, and I'm pretty paranoid about my hearing (I already have some tinnitus from my mis-spent youth as a rock-n-roller). YMMV. As for spending serious money on electronic muffs, well...I've done the math, and shouting is a lot cheaper. 'Sides, I ain't on the line to chat...."shut up and shoot" is my motto.

When I'm at the outdoor range, I use http://www.howardleight.com/products...cts2.asp?id=28 .
When I'm at the indoor range, I use the Leightnings (.50 rental a time; I really need to just break down and buy them) + plugs.
