Pro's & Con's of a trigger job.
For a concealed carry weapon, is this recommended? If so, what recommendations?

You've just opened a can of worms here.
If you choose to get a trigger job done, everyone here will almost unanimously recommend sending it to Rich and Canyon Creek. Those who have had it done generally hold it in the highest esteem. That's the easy part. Opinions as to whether a trigger job should be done on a carry weapons are somewhat more divided.
Reason against: If the weapon is used in a self-defense situation the trigger job may be held against you, because the weapon is easier to fire. Rebuttle: The trigger job is irrelevant in a justified shooting since you had the intention to shoot. It could only be held against you in the case of an ND, because you did not have intention to shoot and the job made it easier to fire. Evidence to support the theory that a trigger job can get you in trouble in such a manner is somewhere between nonexistant to sparse. That is the crux of the argument which will likely ensue. I expect that any real legal liability associated with a trigger job is virtually nill. If you want the job, get it. Many have stated a increase in accuracy due to the reduced weight and smoother action.

An addendum to CyberOtaku's thoughts. I also got the trigger job so I could shoot as accurately as possible and put all three bullets in the BG instead of pulling my shot and hitting Sister Mary on the corner with a 230 grain HP. I have been trained to NEVER put my finger inside of the trigger guard unless I absolutely intend to hear a very loud bang shortly thereafter. Keeping the BG at bay or down on the gound with your finger on the trigger is a very bad thing just waiting to happen.
My opinion, and it is certainly a minority one, is that it doesn't matter if you have a 4 pound or 14 pound trigger. You just don't stick your finger in there unless you are fully engaged in the process of firing your weapon.

And what I really think it boils down to is if you’re comfortable with it. If you are I say go for it. I could not be happier with my trigger job (Springer Precision). But if getting one is going put a nagging voice in the back of your head and make you worry, don't do it. Whatever you decide just be sure to practice, practice, practice so you know YOUR gun.

I've been VERY curious about this recently as well. In the next month I plan to buy my first handgun for concealed carry. I'm most likely going with the XD 45 service. The only thing I don't love about the gun is the trigger. I'm a much bigger fan of the single action pull (as I've used with 1911s). What all goes into a trigger job? Different things? I wouldn't mind a slightly lighter trigger (around 4 pounds). The main thing (and I don't know if this is part of what makes an XD an XD), is the long pull... all of the extra room that you pull the trigger untill you get pressure on it. This is a big reason why I started looking more at 1911s and less at Glocks, but now I'm going from 1911s to probably an XD. I know the mechanics are very different, but can I get a trigger job done that would make it feel more like that of a traditional single action? If so, any idea on cost? Thanks a ton in advance...

For questions on costs, current expected turnaround times, etc., give both of them a call:
http://www.canyoncreekcustom.com/ http://www.springerprecision.com/ I went with Springer Precision simply because his work is reversible (if I ever wanted to go back to stock for some odd reason), plus it was a little cheaper, and the turnaround time was a lot quicker. You can't lose either way. They both also do 1911s as well. Last edited by docrice; 08-09-2006 at 03:57 PM. |

I've heard nothing but praise for Canyon Creek as well, but no personal experience.

Has anybody had work done by both? I'm really curious as to what the difference is in their respective approaches.
