My XD40 Subcompact purchase experience
Well, 2 weeks have passed since my younger brother (21yrs) got the
$h!t beat out of him by 2 total strangers while pumping gas, which sparked my interest back into the world of guns. It's been 10 years since the days of shooting Dad's Ruger 44 in the back yard and I had no idea where to start. I was "gandering" in a large chain store and a Walther P22 caught my eye. What a sweeet piece! Went and applied for my purchase permit at the Sherrifs office, and the following Monday, I went back to get my P22........ 2 grueling hours later, I was escorted to my vehicle with 200 rounds and a spankin' new XD40 Subcompact. Yea....I was totally sold on it. You'd think the GM dude was on commission basis. He was highly enthusiastic about it. Next day, after pleading with my wife most of the night, I headed to my local stress relief center, "Calibers" Shot about 20 rounds and took a break. Went to get my snuff out of the car. I really needed a dip. 45 minutes after returning, I found myself at the counter purchasing a box of 50 Whitebox Winchesters. Ran those out and headed home. Next day, back to the range during lunch. Shot 50 more. Then, it dawned on me........ This is going to cost me a fortune. But well worth it. Any other adreneline-soaked first timers out there?

I hear you...
When I first bought my XD-9 Service a few months ago, it was intended only for occasional practice to be able to use for home defense. Instead, it ended up with me hitting the range 2 -3 times week, shooting 100+ rounds each time. I've since realized that I should:
1. buy ammo in bulk (a case of a thousand at a time) 2. get a range membership 3. read a lot (this forum, for example); set a side an hour or more a day 4. spend less for lunch 5. be prepared to invest in other accessories (extra mags, books, dry box, trigger job, cleaners...) 6. watch the bank account 7. start planning for the next gun 8. start thinking about ways to shoot cheaper (make your own targets, etc.) 9. make sure you learn something from each round shot - maximize your investment 10. watch the bank account One month after I got my XD-9 Service, I got the SC version. Now I'm thinking of a 1911. I ... really ... need to stop. Since you have a .40, get a 9mm conversion kit and practice cheap. Also, the WWB 100-packs at Wal-Mart usually have a couple of extra rounds in my experience (at least for 9mm). It adds up over time. Sorry about your brother. Just ain't right. It doesn't get any better. I've got 6 M1 Garands that I haven't even shot. I've got ammo in calibers that I don't have guns in. I've reloaded ammo in calibers that I don't own a gun to shoot. I've layed out specific "roles" that a gun must fill before I can justify buying it. I've long since filled almost all of those roles, and have began subdividing these roles in to "situations" just to justify buying more guns.
No my friend, it doesn't get any better.

20 rounds? Then another 50?! Man, you're a monster!
Hehehehe..... Welcome to the addiction. I shoot 200-300 rounds per range trip. And I go about twice a week. It's madness, I tell ya.

First time I went to the range with hubby years ago we took:
3 AR's 2 FN's 1 1911 2000 rounds. Shot every last round and had to rebarrel one of the AR's Hubby's Valentine's day present to me? Reloading equipment! |

That's the way to do it. However, I do like to throw 50-100 rounds through the .40 once in a while.
