Staying With Green

I've tried white, orange, red, yellow, and green on my black tactical (it's kind of technicolor now). I will go to all neon green in the future.

I used green on mine. Only highlighted the XD-9 on one side and XD on the other. Its subtle (which I wanted), but you can still see it without it standing out from a 20 feet away. No pics yet, but I will get some up whenever I get my hands on a camera.

I used a silver/grey on my bitone. Gave it a suttle pop to where you can see the etching on the slide. Did it on the top of the slide, the XD, the Springfield Armory. Hasn't rubbed off in the 400 rounds or so though it since I did it.
Edited for not being able to spell

I ended up using neon green model paint and it came out great. One of these days I will get some pictures and post them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall reading somewhere that crayons work as well?

They work as well, but beware if you shoot a few hundred rounds at the range the slide could heat up beyond the melting point of the crayon causing a gooey mess. I think white Crayola brand crayons melting point was around 127ºF. I know mine got messy. You can test the colors with crayon and when you have found the right color combo go to the paint for a lasting effect.

I might also recommend Bright Sights sight paint for this project- available from Brownells and elsewhere.
